howcome everybody says the sti has _much_ better low end torque..

i drove my friend's 04 sti with around 330awhp, and compared to my Evo IX, the low end torque isn't that much different. the STi has a smoother transition when turbo hits full boost (compared to the Evo's spike), but thats about it.

glad the OP went with the Evo; he won't regret it. it handles much sharper and precise, though the STi's a beast in its own right.

thanks a lot to all the replies.

fusion chicken. everyone says sti has better low end torque becuz it has an extra .5 liter. so it is more torquier and the boost on the sti comes in earlier than the evo and i've heard that its pretty much crap from 6k to redline while the evo is supposed dead below 3500 the evo's turbo kicks in around 3500 and pulls all the way to redline.

ok that didn't make much sense, hope u get the pt lol

No offense, but that shows why you are on an evo board and not on an STi board. I have seen plenty of posted stock graphs of STi's in that range...

I'll second Warr on this. They break just as easily if you do crazy/stupid things.

One difference is that the evo does use quite specific oils for its transfer case and rear diff. They're not all that difficult to find, specailly if you're in the US, but if you decide to put something else in the TC rather than the stock then you can expect it to start grinding within 50 miles. The Sti is more 'conventional' in its oil requirements and so a less demanding in this respect.

Perhaps it is true that more evos are broken than stis. The reasons for this can be what we have established - it's much cheaper to make power on evos and its much easier to mod the car yourself.

Beause they take well to mods, most modded evos are quite a lot more powerful than the stock and to put down more power than the thing is designed to do is certain to reduce, however slightly, your reliability.

The other thing is that they're so easy to mod that a mildly competent person can install potentially car-breaking things such as mbc's and cams. I'm not saying these definitely break cars, but if they're installed poorly, then you can expect problems.

With Sti's you tend to have professionals do things, or at least not be so brave as to attempt things yourself (takes at least two people for anything major). So possibilities for problems are lower.

In stock form, both are pretty tough animals. People have modded both to silly powers with stock tranny and they work fine. FWIW, another S203 was bought from at the same time as mine and its tranny was $hagged at only 300miles. The driver stuffed it into 3rd from 6th and there are quite small pieces. I guess he wasn't used to the short-shifter package...

thanks x838nwy for posting that.. i just posted in the sti boards that i'm leaning towards the evo but the only thing thats holding me back is my fear of it breaking down... but ur explaination makes a lot of sense and gives me a little more confidence in the evos longevity.

I currently own an 05 STI, with only 8,900 miles. Thinking of selling it and with the money I will have left, would like to get an EVO IX. But I am debating between the MR or the IX like the call it, and another thing I am debating is regarding the transfer box and transmission problems that EVOS' have had in the past.

I would really appreciate your input on this.

Thank You

If you plan on keeping the evo IX stock, why worry? You have an awesome warranty better than subbie's 3 year / 36,000 mile compared to the evo's 10 year / 100,000 mile.

If you want little mods, wait for the ralliart stuff to come out to keep it under warranty, and some dealers are even mod friendly!

mrcole, the only reason i am getting a evo is becuz i want to mod. if i were to get either car and leave it stock i would get the sti. the evo ixs are getting such amazing numbers with small mods that it would be stupid not to mod. and finally, i've heard of mitsubishi dealerships voiding warranties even if ur car is stock, they'll say u raced it...

I would like to mod it some, reflash and TBE, springs and rims. Any big difference performance wise between MR and GSR due to the 6MT compared to the 5MT? Like for example highway.

Thanks Warrtalon, So practically the sixth gear is more for gas consumption rather than performance in highway, correct?

Hah, no, the 6spd isn't for gas conservation. It's for performance and racing reasons, but there is no power difference. You won't realize the benefits unless you race - primarily road race.
