What is the REAL difference strength wise between the mr's 6 speed and the standard 5 speed... worth the extra money?

strength wise? Well, I can tell you for experience, in Puerto Rico we have tons of EVO VIII and IX, most of the IX's are doing mid 11 seconds on the quarter mile or better. I have seen many problems with the MR 6 speed tranny in the last 6 months and none with the 5-speeds. Including a new EVO IX MR that was bought for road racing and after just one event(only around 3-4 laps because some clutch problems) we had to repair the trannny(sleeves, synchros, etc). I was talking with some friends on a Mitsu service center and they think the same thing, they have been fixing tons of 6-speed trannys, some with less than 5k on the odometer, something we never saw in the 5-speeds.

So, for experience I can tell you that the 5-speed seems to take more abuse and its stronger. I am impress with the 6-speeds and the closer ratios help a lot, but after so many problems with them, I prefer the 5-speed if you are going to race.

1st, and i love doing this since it's been done to me: SEARCH! :-)
2nd, STRENGTH is an engine property not a gear property..
3rd, abuse the car and ur center dif is gonna whine and ur gears are gonna grind with either boxes! Evo's weakest link?!
4th, the 5th gear in the MR, is more of a 4.5 gear.. It only fills the noticeable gap that's between the 4th and the 5th gear of the regular 5sp box.. got that?! So 6gears are more responsive on higher speeds and better in 'street attacks'

The 6spd is more fun, more racing feel, more filling, more show off.. that's the most important to some..

Otherwise, if u're looking to kill every evo on the drag strip, get 5speeds and start ur mods.. If u're looking for a road

Fuel consumption is NOT an issue between the two boxes, it's not worth discussing!! If u worried of fuel consumption, park it and get a Civic LXI 1.6liters for regular days (it's what i did!)

My advice? MR all the way.. Hope this was clear..

Wael
