I recently purchased some touch-up paint from the dealer. When I ordered it, I had to include my VIN. As it was explained to me, the VIN was necessary for an exact paint match.

I've only used it in the trunk of all places. It seems to be a perfect match. The touch-up paint came as a double-sided pen - one side RR and the other clear coat.

They were full of dunky. Touch up paint is not mixed to a specific vin but only left overs from the assembly plant's paint facility. Every so hundred cars will have a different variance due to a new mix of paint. No human or machine can mix a color to the exact tint and variance.

So not all touch up paints will be an exact match to your vehicle, it also depends on where you are applying it. If you have ever looked closely to any car and noticed the bumper covers are darker than the body panels. Plastic is less reflective than metal and that gives you a darker tint. My touch up for my GG matches great on the bumpers and wing but is too dark on the body panels.

True! The touch up paint from Mitsu (the two sided pen) is junk! You will be better off going to a good body shop, and getting a small amount color matched to your exact color. I spoke with the body shop guys at my dealer, and they all agreed. Find out who does body work on Evo's in your area, and you may be able to get a small amount from them for free if they have some left over from a previous job.

I used the touch up pen, and it is several shades darker than my car. I spoke with the body guys about it, and they referred me to the body shop that does work with them. They will be able to get an EXACT match for your color, and then it is as simple as filling the chip, wet sand, wax, and buff.

I also heard that the only Evo's with clear are the metallic colors; Apex Silver, and Graphite Grey. The others have no clear. Just what I heard from the Mitsu dealer bodyshop staff.

This is not true. All of them have a clear coat. Without it the color would be extremely dull and dry sprayed. It is true the Mitsubishi's clear coat sucks but it is there.

They didn't say it was specifically mixed for the car; they needed the VIN for the right color match. I don't think anyone would believe their distribution center could mix and match the paint, package and fill a pen, and deliver it to the dealer within a day.

Every so hundred cars will have a different variance due to a new mix of paint. No human or machine can mix a color to the exact tint and variance.
If Mitsu had the foresight to take paint samples for each mix and then correlate it with the VINs, their request would make sense. It would take a lot of work, which seems unlikely. I really don't know much about this, other than the color pen working well in the spot where I used it.

Well, Im not gonna dispute what you state, but the body shop guys told me that they have wheeled a brand new car (RR Evo VIII with just wax), and the pad is the same color as the car when they have finished. The paint on Evo's is bunk!

Yes the clear coat does suck and is very thin. This is why Mitsubishi colors are notorious to fading. It will not take long with a buffing wheel to burn into it.
