Lancer EVO newb saying hello
Lancer EVO newb saying hello
Hi all,
My girlfriend will be purchasing a lancer evo within the next month for her daily driver. Being a Nissan dubie, I dont have much knowledge of the Evolutions, or anything Mitsubish for that matter.
Anyways, she went to the credit union today, and she will be able to get a loan of roughly 30k. What is the ideal year Evo, and for what reasons? Shes getting super antsy and throwing me links of anything from 03-06, and I dont know what the **** im looking at with these mitsus.
Please give me some insight as to what year Evo's we should idealy be looking at.
I heard the 03's are the lightest, thats all I could find searching the past few days. But other than that I know nothing about these cars.

See Evo General forum. Not so much the US Lancer forum.
Weight difference can most likely be attributed to the lack of ACD in the '03s. Be wary with used sports cars. I shouldn't have to say why. And welcome to the forums.

for 27K you can get brand new EVO RS if you dont care about power windows, alarm, what not. 04, 05, 06 RS is the lightest, 05+ GSR with full package is the heaviest.
If you cannot buy new one? get used evo but 2005 and make sure you check everything about the history of the car and I prefer all stock.

27k gets you a brand new RS huh? Same motor and turbo as the others then? I wont be caring about power windows etc, but im sure she will. Are there any others inbetween RS and GSR?
And how about this ACD...is it any good, or would just uprgrading to a clutch type rear diff be a possible better option?
The 05's have better turbos, correct? Is this why you say look at a used 05?
We test drove a white 05 with 20k on the clock, and they wouldnt budge from 27,300, so we decided to keep shopping. Figured why not buy brand new when they are asking that much....the car was equipped with ACD though, and It seems interesting, but Id like to know more about it.
the ACD sounds something similar to Nissans VLSD, and those things arent anything special.

The ACD system is very different than a Nissan VLSD, the Nissan unit is just a Viscous type LSD (doesnt lock up very aggressively, fluid breaks down after hard use). The ACD unit controls the lock up of the center diff hydraulically depending on conditions (couldnt tell you how big of a difference it makes over Evo's without ACD, but its a pretty complex system and I doubt it'd be on the Evo without a good reason).
I'm pretty sure the rear diff on the Evo is already a clutch type, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
