Question 650 miles - rough engine noise & ticking...

Please, before I'm told to "search", I'd like to note that I've done that already, and found maybe one thread that sounded similar to what I'm experiencing, but it was an old thread, so I thought perhaps with all the technical geniuses and tuners on these boards, you could help.

As the title states, I've got 650 miles on a new 06 IX SE, I changed the oil with 10w30 Mobil 1 full synth with a K&N oil filter @ 600. I've checked the oil levels twice daily since changing it, the oil level is fine. Everything else is still OEM.

Now the issue(s):

At idle and all RPM ranges (that I can tell), there is a continuous tick coming from under the hood. You cannot hear it inside the vehicle, you can hear it ok standing outside it, and when you lift the hood, it's very noticable, coming from the left side, near the serpentine belt (correct terminology?), my cousin listened and suggested it could be the belt, or perhaps a cam?

Also, when driving, at 3.5k rpms+, the engine sounds and feels very rough through the pedals, and loud. Granted, I am not used to either AWD or Turbo vehicles, so this may just be typical for an EVO, especially a brand new one, and I'm worried about nothing. But, just in case, what might I check before I take it into the dealership? Should I even be concerned at this point?

Could just be noise lifters. The non-turbo Lancer is notorious for that noise.

I wouldn't worry about the noisyness. As you pointed out, it's turbo and AWD, so it's going to be different from what you're used to.

why would you change the oil at 600? synthetic thickens the longer its in, and i didnt want to take a chance in case there were additives in the oil, so i waited 5K.

what was your break-in procedure? personally i just started beating on it right away, non-constant rpms, letting on and off the throttle for the first 500 miles, making sure to boost once its warmed up, after 500 miles i started taking it up to redline, and the thing still has a healthy engine noise at 20K miles. oil changes every 5K.

what octane of fuel are you using?? Not enough octane creates a tic tic tic sound.

nothing wrong with changing the oil at 600miles...new cars require early oil changes..
however...stick with oem filter.

i change my oil every 2k...if u drive it hard...change it...sooner...will preserve that motor... would never dream of keeping oil for 5k...
motor warm up is key too...

+watever on lifters

I changed the oil @ 600 due to advice on numerous "breaking in" threads, suggesting that. For my break in process, I kep the RPM's different, non-constant speed, redlined it once (before 600 miles), only took it over 5k rpm's for a split second, approximately 6 times (again, before 600 miles), now I've redlined it a bit since then, but like I said, it feels a lot different than what I'm used to, I wondered if I should be worried or not. Thanks for the help, it is appreciated.

Oh, and I can only get 91 octane @ the pump, thanks a million California.

The rough running may be caused by the non-stock air filter. So try going back to the OEM filter. Tick noise is probably a stuck lifter. If it is loud enough to be heard inside the car with windows up take it back to the dealer for warranty service. Finally, I'd suggest staying away from any modifications until you have all the new car issues worked out. If the dealer sees any nonstock items under the hood your warranty may be voided.

The air filter is still OEM. I changed the oil filter to a K&N when I did the oil change.

No, you can't hear it inside the car, just outside when you're near it, it's most noticable with the hood up though, and it seems to be getting quieter. If it ocntinues, though, I'll definitely take it in and have it looked at. Thanks again.

You have NOTHING to worry about, it's all completely normal, the injectors are very loud and cause that ticking sound. As for the engine sounds and such at 3.5k miles it's an AWD car, there will be unusual whines and such.

Most Fuel Injected vehicles have a ticking noise from the injectors, it's completly normal. Stand next to a new Ford Ranger, talk about load ticking.
