Egt???

I see this is a gauge many members use and suggest. What does knowing this temp. tell you??? I did seach first and couldn't find an answer.

I currently have an AEM UEGO, and a **** Autometer for boost that is going to be replaced with a new electronic guage (maybe the new AEM or a Defi BF series.)

Thanks in advance for the info.

EGT is exhaust gas temperature...usually put in the exhaust manifold to tell you your exhaust temps. Basically to let you know how hot your car is running and if its abnormally hot then you have a way of knowing when to shut down before something breaks.

Couldn't you just look at the factory engine temp. gauge??

I see. Now I saw someone post this

"AEM does not offer an EGt as they use their wideband Uego gauge to take its place."

How does my Uego take its place?

Usually by the time your engine temp shows the car is too hot, your in trouble already. Also, you EGT can be useful in other ways.

A high egt may mean your running too lean, which may not show up on an engine temp guage... which basically monitors engine coolant temps. It also takes longer for engine coolant temps to change than egt, so the egt is more accurate.

You exhaust manifold can also be getting to hot while your coolant isn't... you're manifold/headers don't use engine coolant to regulate their temps.

Well, I think that's about right. I could be wrong though, its been known to happen once or twice a year.

I wouldn't put an EGT on a downpipe.. Buschur recommended people install theirs on the collector of the turbo manifold 2" from the turbo itself...

Extra rich condition - hot egt's
Normal - slightly cooler egt's
lean - very hot egt's

Normal WOT egt is around 1600F or like ~860C
Its a problem if you see egt's above the 900C+ or ~1700F

But, since I have a wideband, do I really need one?

and your right about the downpipe.. it should probably go on the manifold

Necessity is only the eye of the beholder..

An egt if your consistently messing around with your tune would be useful as a tool for conditions that can cause knock, lean spots, etc.

For the Average driver non tuner I can't see its use personally.

Perhaps one of our vendors would like to chime in with their personal experiences.

For the everyday non-tuner driver, I would recommend a boost, oil temp, and oil pressure gauge.

I was actually debating between the egt and oil pressure. Looks like I'll be adding an oil pressure gauge when I get my new boost gauge.

Thanks for all the info everyone!

The EGT would help immensely while tuning but oil temp and pressure could help prevent damage to the engine occurring. You wouldn't boost when the oil isn't up to temperature or pressure which is a leading cause of motor problems on FI motors.
