Question tranny, stick or auto?

hey everyone, this is my first thread on this site. It's pretty cool, I've been looking for mods, and sites for lancers, It's too bad there aren't more. Any way, I have an automatic ES and I was wondering if I should convert it to stick, or if I'd be better off just leaving it the way it is? I would really appreciate some opinions. Thanks!

If by "convert" you mean swap transmissions then no. If you mean "trade it in, eat a loss and get a 5spd ES" then sure, go for it. Whatever makes you happy.

yah, theres no point in trying a transmission swap. the thousands you spend in swapping will prolly be the same as the thousands youll lose in a trade-in. how did you end up with e wrong transmisison anyways?

Well, the car was kind of a gift. My parents got it for me for graduation, but i"m paying the payments. They didn't ask whether or not I wanted a stick or Automatic

That was sweet of them. Now kick your dad in the ***** and tell him you want a 5spd.

Seriously, whatever you decide, good luck.

I know tranny's are expensive, but not thousands. I can also do the swap myself. I get most of my stuff at wholesale prices, so I can get a pretty good deal. I Just don't know how fast I'll be able to be with an automatic tranny.

Trade in, man. They I think would be more than happy to do it so long as you keep making payments...

You'd have to get the pedal assembly and **** too. Not to mention the 5spd Lancers and AT's run different ECU's, so that's another $800 beans right there. Then when it comes to transmission warranty (if you care at all about that) you're going to get done dirty by your dealer. It's a lot less of a hassle to trade in or just keep the AT.

I just got my 03 OZ Rally a few weeks ago and wrestled for days before making a decision on going AT or MT. In the end I decided on MT. There were a lot of factors that went into the decision: you can boost a MT higher than an AT (especially if you're willing to replace internals), I talked to Andrew a lot about it, and in the end I decided it just be more fun to drive. So far I am 100% happy with the decision I made.

All of that to say, I think changing is a great idea, but like Andrew said, swapping out the tranny is gonna be one big pain in the bumper. If I were you I'd trade it in and go for the MT. I think you'll be happy you did in the end. Hope everything works out.

EDIT:

Yes it will make a difference. The AT has issues with boosting that relate to the transmission. Also, fitment of an I/C setup is harder on the AT, though RRM has done it. I think (not sure) that ATs can only handle around 5-6psi of boost. You can go much higher than that on an MT w/ upgraded internals and an I/C setup. Hope this helped. (Not sure about the psi on the AT ask someone who has one or run a search for the exact numbers)
