Evo good for new driver?

Hey guys,

I just got my license and everything. I was wondering if you guys could provide some honest answers to some of my questions.

Do you think an EVO is suitable for a new driver like myself? (I don't have much manual transmission experience, only a little) Is it going to be too powerful for me to control? If EVO wouldn't be a good choice, what other car would be better?

Lastly, do you guys know the approx MSRP of the EVO X?

Thanks

Are you looking to get the Evo right now or in 2 years... It would probably be best if you waited for the X any ways... If you need a car right now the Evos go from 29-33 depending on which model you are wanting to get... I got an Evo as my first car and I love it... People on here will tell you that it is took much of a car for young people but I thought I could handle it so I got it... If you think you can handle the power and the care that goes into the car then go ahead...

other good cars to consider are the Acura RSX Type-s, Audi A4, BMW 3series, Acura TL type-s, Nissan 350z, Lexus IS 250/350 and Infiniti G35

Man, thanks a bunch for the reply. Yea I just heard alot of other people at the dealer yesterday, they were like... EVO for you?!

I actually really like the new X, but I just don't know how much its going to be. I hear different prices, some say 30-35, others say 50-60.

The Evo is NOT!! a beginner car! You will hurt yourself, or someone else.

If i were you i'd wait for the X or better yet search around. This isn't a transmission to learn on by any stretch of the imagination. I started with an RSX-S and learned the basics of driving and maintenance until i felt i was ready to get into a much more complicated and technical platform like the Evo.

You sound and act a little more knowledgeable/respectable than most 16-year-olds who come no here asking what color MR their parents should buy them. That being said hopefully you'll understand where we're coming from.

As much as I hate to sound like an old fart EVO is in no way a good first car unless you did a driving school, like a skip barber.

its not a good first car, get something that is less maintenence and power, there is a lot to learn when you first start driving, don't want to fill your plate up...

I say get a Camry, Civic, or some other slower sedan. You are young, and the money will come in handy.

The fact that you also have little experience on the manual transmission should also make another excuse to steer clear. Also, please increase your knowledge of cars (any cars) prior to a purchase. It will help save you time and money.

There have been dozens of threads from 16 year olds on here asking if they should get an Evo as their first car. The consensus (from me too) is "NO". There is too much power for a new driver and it can be an awfully expensive investment (especially if you get the modding bug). I know of 2 high school kids in my area that wrapped their cars around trees because they thought they could handle the Evo, but they were wrong.

I think like a few other posters so far: get yourself something with reasonable power and learn to drive before you step up to the plate with this kind of car.

I've had my license for about two years now - waited until I was 20 to get it. Anyway, the EVO is defintily not a car that you want to have as your first car - you are too likely to do something stupid in it or over react to a situation that you are encountering for the first time and either hurting yourself, others, or totaling your car.

As some advice - since I am still somewhat of a new driver myself, this is also from recently hard learned experience - spend about $5000 or so to get a newer car that you will not have any major mechanical problems with and practice your driving more - get used to driving in the driving on windy days, in the rain, in bad traffic, ect. Also, get a car that has a standard transmission so that you can get used to driving a standard for a few years before you move on to a more aggressive car like an EVO - then once you have a few years under your belt as a driver then you can move on to a new EVO and you will still have a second car around for a winter beater.

I don't think the EVO is a good first car. It's fairly pricey, attracts attention from cops, and has more power than first-time drivers have had experience with. You might tell yourself you'll take it easy, but you won't.

I think everybody's first car should be a Civic. Seriously. Reliable, great mpg, and you don't have to worry about it being vandalized at school/college. Get the Si if you need more pep, but one you get a little older you'll be more experienced and an EVO X would be a fine choice.

In HS I drove the hell out of whatever car I had. Had I been driving an EVO I surely would have been in an accident because I didn't know my driving limits back then. Luckily I was driving a Civic. :-p
