What guages to install

What kind of guages do evo owners normally install? I know a boost guage, but what are 2 more that everybody feels are mandatory?

I personally run the Defi boost, EGT, and oil pressure. I think a wideband O2 might be a good one to get as well. I guess if I had to pick 3 I would say boost, wideband, and oil pressure. But for me the wideband wouldnt fit in my Gruppe-S panel and the Defis are the only jewelry on my car so I am happy. Just my opinion here...

boost, then wideband IMO. A wideband that logs is the ****. Plus some you can monitor several things with just the wideband. Ex. the zeitronix on my rs-t is setup for wb 02, rpms, tps. You can also get an egt probe and a boost sensor and have everything in one. IDK if the zeitronix is compatible with some of the other logging software like evoscan ecutek or whatever, I haven't searched enough to find out yet. Of course something like that with all the options will run you ~$600

I ordered the Defi boost, oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, and the AEM uego wideband. From what I hear the EGT is more trouble than it's worth. AMS doesn't even use that gauge on 99% of their cars.

I was thinking about getting the fuel pressure gauge as well--but Chris told me about a trick where you tap the boost and ebc into the fuel pressure regulator line and if you lose fuel pressure your boost gauges will always read "0". He said that's something they do at the shop. So maybe that's one gauge you don't have to worry about ? I don't know if I'm going that route myself...but I might.

Just some food for thought.

Why is the EGT gauge such a trouble? Heat makes power, heat kills engines, right?
EGT gauge keeps your expensive engine together.

Too be honest I was going to get one now in addition to getting the rest of the gauges. I had a conversation with one of the guys at AMS and he told me they don't use the EGT sensors/gauges in 99% of their cars. I couldn't begin to say what they might be thinking in those decisions, but IMHO for most street applications the EGT sensor/gauge would be a little unnecessary. True, it does measure heat--it's a pyrometer after all--and If something is awry and affects the exhaust temps this gauge would certainly let you know. However given the most people's limited budget, and depending on the intended application and current modification levels of the vehicle, the wideband and boost gauges are probably more important for most of the cars here. This doesn't mean I may not get one in the future. If I start getting into very high modification levels or start racing--I will end up doing that. Right now I drive to work, and back home from work. During the process I might drive a little more aggressively at times. I will eventually take the car auto-x'ing, possibly to a track day. When that time comes I will probably get the EGT.

I mean to be honest...none of us NEED to replace any of these gauges. The stock gauges although not as accurate as aftermarket, work well enough for the daily driver. The car has dash warnings if fuel pressure or oil pressure go below a certain level, and for most people's car's their engines will never get to the point for having a need for most of the gauges that are in the car or simply will never be used in a fashion to need most of the gauges in the car. For most scenarios...it's more preference than anything else.

So with that being said, I got the boost gauge (to go along w/ the greddy ebc), the wideband for a/f monitoring, I got the oil and water temp because those are more likely to flucuate in day to day activities (and the stockers are not accurate). I got oil pressure because that's something that I would need to immediately stop the car for in the event of a problem.

Hope this helps (the original poster)

Heat kills power actually. It is a parasite!

I personally run the Defi EGT because it fits in my Gruppe-S panel and is functional. I will get a wideband here someday and mount it somewhere where it wont look out of place. I see they have all these little digital DIN boxes now instead of an actual guage so I can mount one of those anywhere without it looking too out of place. I would recommed the oil pressure though, especially if you plan to mod the car highly in the future, like a turbo upgrade for example. Most sports cars have these stock.

Yep--kinda like how an open air filter's added airflow benefits can be negated by severe heat soak?

Is that Defi brand that has the DIN gauge for EGT? Because that might allow me to not have to worry about finding another spot!! I've got 2 set for the a-pillar, and I replaced the bottom 3 gauges w/ 52mm ones.
