I am going to look/buy an 03 evo on thursday. Its an 03 with 16K on it. The dealership (small private lot) said the car is stock, but they also said they havent had an EVO in before!! But I noticed the badges are missing on the trunk, has a K&N filter sticker on the stock airbox, and thats all I cansee in the pics.
I thought there was a stock rev limiter....and I know to check for the VIN stickers on all panels, and I will do a visual inspection of the car for any other parts. I was told its in excellent condition. Its a 1-owner and the carfax verified that. I am wondering what is the stock rev limiter (maybe I will know if it has a flash??), and anything else I should look for to make sure its stock other than an air filter? Any help would be great!
Heres a link to the car:

-Check for tampering of the BCS/vac. lines, (under the airbox.) You can see if the car utilized an MBC.
-Look under the car for removed underpanel, (missing or MOLESTED plastic screws.) This can tell you if the bumper has been removed for whatever reason.
-Suspension bolts on the top 'hats' in the rear trunk have a red marking on the bolt and strut tower showing the direction of a properly torqued bolt, (see if it mates.) You can tell if the suspension has been out of the car.
-Car should have a rev limiter in gear, no higher than 5k RPMs. Otherwise you can tell it's been flashed.
HTH..

You can always call the dealer and make sure the VIN has not been black listed.
It definitely looks stock -- but it is so hard to tell from pics

You say the rev limitier is 5K in gear.....you mean in gear with the clutch disengaged correct? So if its in neutral I can rev till it blows??? Thanks for the other things.....I didnt know about any of those!Originally Posted by inco9nito99

Actually 03's do not have a rev limiter in neutral unless it has been flashed. It will be at stock 7500rpm.

Maintenance records are always a plus too. PPI (pre-purchase inspection) is essential if you get serious.Originally Posted by schred86

Since it's an 03 it doesn't have a rev-limter stock. So if you go in there and rev the engine it should go all the way up to 7000 no matter what gear your in, it came stock like that from the factory. The biggest thing I would look for is molested hosing under the airbox for a MBC. It seems that it one of the first mods.

It's got a rev limiter it just doesnt have launch control or a 2 step rev limiter (actually it's got one but it's set above 7500rpms.. go figure)

The way they advertise it is wrong obviously with lack of knowledge on what the evo is or what counts as a modication. The lack of badges would have been my first notice as well as the fact that the front license plate was removed. With the K & N filter changed I would already consider that a mod. I remember the evo I checked out before the one I bought had the same K & N sticker, as well as some other labels which let me know it had been previously modified. Be very careful and check everything you can is my suggestion. And what the heck is a "spritz shot?"

i bought my evo used from a dealership, the guy said it was 100% stock.
so after about 6 months I installed a boost gauge, and found out i was only boosting 10psi (which made sense b/c the car felt really slow lol)
then i come to find it had a TBE b/c the douchebag literally broke the springbolt up to the o2. (it was only connected by 1).. and my radiator looks a little dinged (possible turbo upgrade?)
i did however install the walbro myself, and it had the stock pump in it
