How good is the Evo in side collision?

I just had a 8 hours driving course today coz I got a ticket back in november my first one in 3 years LOL

Anyways, I thought about the Evo, and I know they have front airbags but they don't have side airbags? how resilient is the Evo in side collisions? has it been tested yet?

Thanks.

a collision is the last thing on my mind but.......depending on speed, anything over 80 mph will give you hell

On a scale of 1-10 the 2004 and earler models rated a 3...

On later revisions they rate them at a 8.

Be safe.

The reason why the Evo gets a bad rating for side impact is no side airbag. The subie WRX has a little airbag that pops out of the side of the seat. The Subie owner's manual instructs you to sit on the seat in such a way that your arm won't be in the way. Huh!

If you view a car that dates to the late '60's to early '70's you will find it equipped with wider, stronger seat belts. Then the car makers petitioned congress to relax the belt standards because it was costing them to much to add structure to their vehicles to support the anchor points. The anchor points obviously need to be as strong as the belts. So, we got the narrow belts we have now. Then we had to have reels on the belts so we could move around while driving.

I was just looking at an ad for a S class Mercedes – 10 air bags. With the Evo getting gigged for having no side impact airbags you know how the next Evo is going to be equipped.

A friend bought his wife a new small Chevy. She made a little road trip with it and when coming back to town the airbag in the steering wheels fired. Well, she wasn't too far from home so once she regained her composure, she drove on. The second airbag in the steering wheel fired (yup, there are two) and hit her in the face again. There was a short in the cruise control wiring and it burned into the airbag wiring. The car has been sitting at the dealership for four weeks now awaiting the back ordered airbags.

Look at any race car and how many airbags do you find? Since the Evo is as close to a race car as any new car you can buy, why do we have to accept the junk safety equipment that goes into normal passenger cars?

Edit: Per the March '07 Road & Track the Evo X will come with seven standard airbags.

It is not the airbag (or lack thereof) that provides a high / low rating. The frame and interior design have much more to do with the ratings than the airbag. Check out the 2 websites that show the intrusion and you will clearly see that there are issues with the Evo and side impacts...
