Skeptical of getting an Evo IX MR
Well let me just start off by saying Hi to everyone on EvoM...I've been a spectator on the boards for awhile.. just reading most posts and never bothering to reply.. but have recently signed up ;]
The reason for this post though.. is I've never owned any Evo.. and I'm seriously considering buying an Evo IX MR new.
The dilemma is after reading plenty of posts on here, there seems to be tons of complains housed against the stock makeup of the Evo IX. Now I'm sure it could just be the normal complaining everyones going to do about a product, but before jumping into an investment of 30k$ plus I want to make sure, as I will probably be leaving the car quite stock for sometime... as I am currently only 18 and a college student.. and the car payments + insurance would be pretty much the limit of my budget.
The question is, with a very very limited knowledge of cars.. (I seriously don't know much about cars.. but am very willing to learn..) and wanting to use the car as a Daily Driver.. with a commute of about 80-90 miles to work.. a few times a week.. is the Evo worth it?
I really don't plan to be racing the Evo or taking it to the track anytime soon, but possibly in the future after I'm finished with school and have the budget for mods.. for now I just need a car as a DD and with some occasional power for when I want to get on the right pedal :]
Thanks for all your help, in advance :]

Don't get it.
Strike one.
Strike two.
And most importantly...
Know your priorities.

First of all welcome and you have alot to learn and it can all happen with the SEARCH button.. that will save you alot of time and flaming... #2 the evo is not an investment it a material item that you wish to spend $30K on, you will later realize that it is quite expensive to maintain this car. as far as you being 18 and owning an evo well that will probably cause some cotraversy with other members but just be responsible and dont be a dumb ricer if you get it.. as far as getting an MR.. is it really necessary for you to have that extra gear and HIDs and aluminum roof for that extra $$$, imo you should just get the IX(gsr), or the IX SE(special edition).... if you are keeping the car stock for a while you should have absolutely no problems daily driving it, AND you will keep your warranty if you keep it stock.. good luck on the purchase....

What I meant was that the car payment of an Evo + Insurance would be about as high as I could afford while going to school still.
Thanks for the help on it all.. but I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to do.. I'm just worried the maintenance on an Evo is what would end up killing me.. not the actual payments themselves..

i say save you money and buy another car til you can really afford it. The Evo isnt an investment....no car really is (imo). At 18 i was driving around civics, crx and hatchbacks. You'll be able to afford the maintanence, gas and insurance! Especially if your thinking of an MR, your talking about a big monthly unless you put a ton of money down. You wont truly appreciate the car until you age alittle (no offense) and by that time you'll have made better choices of what you do and how you take car of your car. Im sure the guys 25 yrs.old and up will agree! trial and error!

I would personaly say that the evo is my pride and joy ....aside from my wife and newborn...cough cough. i love driving it everyday to work and back home. i commute about 60 miles 6 days a week. especialy on gt35r, and yes im lovin every minute of it. i would say go for it, and you'lll learn a lot from your future evo. it also helps to ask around and read on the forums for advise. If you can afford the expense's on the evo.

IMO, based on all the info in your first post, it may not be in your best interest to purchase an evo. not that it really matters what i say because you're probably gonna end up getting one anyway. hehe
before i purchased my evo, a friend of mine that also owns an evo told me to be mindful that the car requires a bit more maintenence than other cars. i shrugged it off because i wanted it no matter what. when i think about it now, i regret not taking him more seriously. but hey, you gotta pay to play, right?
first off, remember that this car doesn't get the greatest gas mileage, especially if you have a heavy foot (if you don't have a heavy foot now, you WILL), and eats a lot of gas. oil changes have to be done more often than other cars (every 3k miles), which you probably already know. the stock tires are pretty soft so keep in mind that you will probably have to buy new tires within the year. trans/diff fluids have to be changed every 15k and costs ~$200 to do at the dealer.
i told myself the same thing about wanting to keep it stock for awhile. well, needless to say at 3k miles i already purchased stage 1 mods. this car has so much aftermarket support that it makes it extremely hard not to want to mod. the evo is such a money pit.
well, i dunno. don't get me wrong. i enjoy the car. i just wish i prepared myself a bit more. you're still young. finish up all your school stuff, get a high paying job and then you can enjoy buying toys. the evo will always be there...well, the future models anyway. :P

I'm kinda unwilling to write entirely new content for a near identical thread so i'll paste my own post from the last one of these threads enjoy
My take on the Evo: (Long post)
Having done 30 minute commutes most of my life I can safely say as a daily driver the Evo will NOT be as comfortable, as affordable, as quiet, or even dare i say as sexy as many many many luxury to semi luxury cars you can easily find out there.
Of course those are are BORING as hell too..
Last commuter I owned was a 2002 Mazada protege, brilliant little car but it had one complete fundamental flaw in a car that I simply find unforgivable. It lacked any and ALL ability to give me enjoyment with my right foot. Neigh it did so much worse than that, it completely demeaned me as a man driving what must equate to as the "poor mans vehicle". I'm talking about the fun factor, the pure enjoyment you take out of a vehicle which was made with simple purpose. To accelerate you to dazzling speeds, maneuver your way around corners with impossible precision, to thrill you, to satisfy you with its looks, and aggressive nature we bring forth a racing bred rally monster.
The Evo is not a pretty face on the tarmac, it is war machine who's purpose in life was to obliterate the very tarmac that stands before you. You will not find the Evo as economical having to make more frequent stops to fill up with your premium choice brand fuel. The interior is... shameful of anything remotely in that price range but despite all this it has the one feature that matters. Raw adulterated power combined with its racing seats, momo steering wheel, and five (or 6) speed manual gearbox you have yourself one formidable street fighter. I bought my first motorcycle because it was fun, not because it was practical and so I could use it everyday. The Evo is superior to the bike in ways that I don't have to worry about freezing my butt off when its cold, sweating to death when its hot, and when it rains... who cares
If saving pennies, listening to quiet classical music, and driving in absolute perfect comfort are things that give you pleasure on your daily facade then I give you this advice. Buy a something else.

In all reality if I don't go with the Evo I'm probably leaning towards an 88-91 CRX or a Integra GSR..
but yah either way.. it will get me to work and school... ;]
Personally, being 2 years out of college, and ^^25 yrs old, i would say hold off at your current stage. The Evo is a tuners car, meaning it does lack the normal equipment you would get standard in a cheaper car, aka CRUISE CONTROL, especially if your driving 90 miles on a highway. I personally sac'd the comforts of a decent stock stereo, stock decent gas miles (esp stock 87 gas, as the evo REQUIRES 93 if you want to "use" your car), stock cruise control, stock super blower on the AC, stock tint, stock leather, stock etc etc etc, that you would Normally get with a VW, honda, or lesser Lancer or the like. *A new lancer would also introduce you to
and how they are put together*
So, if your focusing on your education, and the life/party that is college, and you technically won't have "time" to really dig down and put the time in with the car, then yes i'd advise no.
However,
If your all about racing, going to the track, going to an autocross, drag racing, street racing, bacially any situation where you would USE THE POTENTIAL of the car and have gasoline in your veins and all you dream about at night is passing a Viper on the OUTSIDE of a turn, then go for it bro!
