Thoughts on this Evo RS....Please Help!

Today i was at a dealership looking at some used evo's, i undertand buying used is risky with evo's, but theres no dealerships here in CT that have any brand new IX's.

Anyway this place has a 2004 Evo RS white with 28,000 miles, they want $23,999 and are VERY firm on the price and wont budge. The car is practically mint, the exterior is basically flawless with couple scratches here and there thats bout it. The paint looks really good. The owner told me the car was owned by an owner of a mitsubishi dealership and the guy always had it garaged.. i can believe that b/c of the paint for one but also b/c of the brembo calipers, the red paint was like brand new it wasnt chipped at all, unlike an 05 evo they had on the lot which was chipped on the brake calipers. The interior was really clean..The guy put it on a lift and I looked underneath and everything was clean, all original **** was on there so it didnt really look like it was modified at all.

heres where it gets tricky......

i'm not familiar with the gearbox or clutch on an evo, but i know the stock clutch is crap... when i test drove the car, the car wouldnt grab until the clutch was basically all the way up, which i found that to be odd, since my s2k it grabs like a little before halfway... also i noticed the clutch was hard to push down, you had to give it some force... and lasty the gearbox didnt feel soo smooth, i dunno if its normal or not, but for some reason u had to really push it over all the way to the left, then up to get it into 1st gear... again im not sure if this normal with evos...

so what im asking is everyones opinion on this car, im debating whether i should get it or not... what i am also curious on, is the gearbox, is this normal for evos or is this just something with the 8's.. or are the 9's different?

Also the guy said the 10yr-100mile powertrain warranty isnt transferrable, only valid to original owner, is that true?

thanks alot guys

you get a 5 year 60,000 powertrain warranty when you buy the car used.

my evo gear box is pretty smooth, but then again i have the 6 speed and it only has 2500 miles on it....

you still have time until the warranty runs out if something breaks

The basic new car warranty (5yr/60k mi) is transferable. The 10yr/100k is not.

Be weary on this RS. Of all the EVO's I've driven in and out of the shop and on test drives, the clutch has NEVER been difficult to press down. Gearbox should also be pretty smooth; its not BMW smooth, but its smooth.

High clutch engagement is typical of a clutch thats starting to slip...you just might not notice it as slip cause its not so bad yet. If you drive it again, see if you can get the car on a hill/incline and see if letting the clutch out slowly with no gas allows the car to roll backwards, or if the car starts to stall. If it stalls, the clutch should be good.

I'd get very clear terms on how long the clutch/trans will be covered. You may want to look at a new Evo all together.

if you have an extra few thousand on hand for a new aftermarket clutch and other drivetrain parts then get the evo.

you could try and get warranty work done, but i would make sure that the car still has it and the dealership will honor it

You can get a brand new one here in California for not much more (25,000-26,000). Probably not much help to you though. I would shop around and find an old guy selling one with less miles cheaper.

The clutch is normally hard to depress compared to hondas and normally releases high, almost at the top, and the firm kinda notchy feeling in the shifter is normal too. I sat in an S2000 yesterday and was surprised by how easy the clutch was to press. The evo clutch isn't crap, its just weak in a drag racing scenario which it wasn't designed for to begin with. The driveline is pretty heavy duty, Kids just beat the hell out of these cars. If your up in the powerband it should shift pretty smoothly.

it is normal for a 2004 to be notchy. they added teflon coating on the gear linkage for the 06 that is why shifting is smoother compared to older models. but like bro said, if it is up in the powerband, transmission has been warmed up then it should shift smoothly.
