Chances are that you were only partially in gear and when it comes back out, it makes a loud bang as there is LOTS of load on it. It should be fine but keep an eye on it and make sure that it is all the way in gear.

You're not leaking any fluids are you? My car used to do this in 5th gear. It would engange then under hard acceleration pop out of gear, which is a very loud noise. I was on a road trip from SoCal to Colorado. When I got to Colorado I did my undercar inspection from the trip to make sure everything was in order (I do this weekly now anyway because I am paranoid). I found that I was leaking transmission fluid. I had about 3500 miles on my IX MR at this point. Took it to the dealer as it had no mods at that point so warranty would be no issue. They put it up on the lift and did an "oh ****." A freeze plug blew out of the tranny. They said this is very rare, and that this would be written up as a manufacturing defect. They wanted to send the tranny back to Mitsu ASAP to ensure that there would be no further issues with other 6-speed trannys. They were worried they could have a potential recall on their hands. Long story short, all the tranny fluid drained out and fried the whole thing. They ordered me a new one and installed it for free. I was out a car for 2 weeks while they had the transmission on order. They have no idea how the freeze plug came out. I didn't drive the car hard. I haven't ever launched it (on either tranny). No racing, just a true daily driver.

Probably not your issue, but I would double check you aren't leaking fluid. I was leaking a lot, to the point where my transmission was making noise. Same symptom as mine, just hopefully different root cause. Mine did this in 5th repeatedly as well. However, mine was once 5th fully engaged. Then it would come out under hard acceleration.

seems like it could be one of 2 things. Either it wasn't in gear all the way, which would throw it back out, or you had it in gear all the way and floored it and it still popped out which is what happened to me (1st gear). i would put it into first, and when you would hit the gas, around 4-5 thousand rpm it would pop out and make a loud thump. got it fixed, and they said it was the first gear sleeve
