low mileage question?

I would really like to know why some people care about "low" mileage on a car? Let me explain.
My 06' EVO IX MR has 51,457 miles and I bought the car in Nov 05'. Everytime my friends that also drive EVO's ask me how many miles are on my car, they gasp when I tell them how many mine has - like I commited some kinda crime or something. My EVO has never been to a drag strip or launched hard on the street - EVER, I have used nothing but AMSOIL 10-30 every 3000 miles in the engine for the whole 51,457 miles without missing any service intervals, I have serviced the trans/transfer case/rear diff twice in this 51,457 mile timeframe, and my car gets waxed with Zymoil at least once every 2 months. The damn paint still looks brand new for gods sake. I also keep the interior of the car clean and stain free. Now, on the other hand, my friends that have 05's and only 23,000 or so miles have all draged their cars. One guy dogs the hell out of his 05' low milage EVO on a regular basis. Their oil is black as sin whereas mine is always a nice golden brown color and their paint and interior look no better than mine - some actually look worse and they have less miles than me.
I just don't get the whole "low" mileage aspect. I mean, if I were to go trade my car in or try to sell it to someone - I would get penalized for having "high" mileage and therefore would not get nearly as much for my well maintained car as the one friend I have would get for his well dogged out 23,000 mile 05'. How do people really know the life a certian car has lead for the mileage on the odometer. I feel that mileage should'nt matter and that the overall condition of the car should be the determining factor when trading in or selling. I bought my car to drive and enjoy not let it sit and worry about my mileage. I am stationed in Oak Harbor, WA and have taken two cross country trip to Louisiana to see my family and friends. In a couple weeks I am taking another and will put an additional 6,000 or so mile on my car. I am taking 9 quarts of AMSOIL with me and my oil will get changed twice on this trip.

****EDIT**** I'm sorry for the misinformation. I bought my car in Nov 05' not 06'. The EVO IX had just hit the showroom floors when I bought my car.

I'll explain real quick. You are a rare exception. The more miles a car is driven, the more danger it is subjected to. And your buddies with the low mileage cars that beat the **** out them on a daily basis are also an exception. Most low mileage cars have no problems, are well maintained, etc. As the car gets older, people tend to care less, miss one or two scheduled maintenances, etc. Also lets not forget normal wear. Things wear out, period. The more miles you have on the car, the closer you are to wearing things out. That is reflected in the declining value of a car with more and more miles.

Excuse me for playing captain obvious....But that's ALOT of miles. Not saying in a bad way just noting. I say good for you for taking exceptional care of a car you obviosly spend alot of time in. My car is getting up there in miles also, but I did buy it to drive it, and I do.

51K miles in 7 months! You are a rare exception indeed. Thats a little over 7300 miles a month. Sounds like your taking cross country trips every month and then some. I agree though you should enjoy your car rather than worry about mileage. Problem though is there isn't a guage on the dash that measures "car condition."

Dude you're right enjoy your car you bought it to drive it. Evos were meant to be driven. Just that miles on a car ties in with wear and could be why its so startling to your friends.

Yeah, you are absolutly right - things wear out with high mileage but if they are well maintained the wear rate is not nearly as great as someone that does not take care of their cars. It is possible for a 50,000+ mile car to have less wear and tear than a 20,000+ mile car. I used to run a quick lube shop for 5 years before I joined the Navy and let me tell you that the majority of people think that changing their oil is the only maintenance required for a car. I can't even tell you how many customers rolled in with brand new cars when I first took over my shop and before I left after 5 years were on their 2nd transmission in the vehicle because they felt that transmission services were "a waste of money" and that "if it ain't broke or giving me problems, I'm not going to worry about it so just change my engine oil". They would tell me in great detail of how their trans began to slip and how it just left them. After some customers would tell me they replaced their trans, 15,000 miles down the road my employees would tell them it was time for a service and the customer would reply "well it's a brand new transmission, don't tell me I need to service it already" and sure enough roughly another 2 years down the road that same customer would be telling me how he had to replace another transmission. It's odd how some people see nothing wrong with spending 2 grand on a new trans but will not come off the 49.95 every 15,000 or so miles to service their automatic trans fluid. It was like pulling teeth trying to get people to service the "other" aspects of their cars. I even used to tell them that if they thought my prices were to high - to go somewhere else and get it done. I was truely looking out for thier best interest. All I'm saying is that I don't know who came up with the theroy you explained above but knowing what I know and dealing directly with the public for 5 years, I can tell you that the majority of people don't take care of their new cars. Most people think that just changing the engine oil is all that needs to be done to a new vehicle. If the people that think differently could come spend some time at any quick lube place I bet their minds would change on the low mileage/high mileage theory.

Sorry man. I bought my car in Nov 05' not 06'. Reading your post made me realize the mistake I made. I edited the original post to correct the mistake.

It's all about the wear and tear on the driveline and chassis.

I bought my rs in Jan of 2006 and i just hit 6500 miles. of course its not my daily driver but i get a lot of joy from letting the car sit for a week or two and then getting in and feeling the power! With that comes low miles. I really really love taking it to the track but sad to say ive only been twice. thats going to change!
I have the same reaction when someone says they have a lot of miles, but the truth is... who cares, enjoy your car! if you like driving it then who cars about the miles.. if anything just build a 2.3 when you hit 120k!
