First, I would say don't waste your $ getting a tune now if you are going to do a TBE next month. Get the tune afterwards, you'll see way better gains... As far as the intake, people say HKS is the best, I'm sure a Buschur makes good power too. Those are two of the best IMO.

Apexi has MUCH better filtering characteristics than the HKS. FWIW The HKS lets a LOT go through.

I've had the apexi for about a year now still going. I like how the Buschur Racing one looks though.

I would wait and put the filter and exhaust on at the same time then get tuned for the mods to make the most out of them.

You are not qualified to make this statement.

HKS RS is one of the WORST INTAKES FOR THE EVO, PERIOD.
Do not get the HKS RS flower.

The K&N drop in or any K&N cone based intake such as the INJEN unit will work great.

I have to disagree I have the HKS as do many evo owners and I was dynoed with it and i'm perfectly fine. To each is own, everyone here is going to say that the intake they have in their opinion is the best. If your doing mild upgrades like a TBE and boost controller, just stick with a K&N drop in and you'll get good gains. If you want a pretty looking intake under your hood just go with buscher, ARC or HKS IMO. Professional tuners claim the stock intake box handles up to ballpark 400whp. Just my .02 cents

So when you guys are saying "drop in" that means just the square filter?

You are not a tuner. Not everyone is going to say the the intake they have is the best. I don't hear Typhoon owners in here cheering about their's.

If you had enough techical experience with the 4g63 to give sound advice and understood what the HKS RS does to the karman vortex signal to the ECU you would understand why it requires a screwed up fueling map, just to keep the car from knocking. Even at a full rich 7.4AFR programmed in the ECU at peak torque, on many cars it is not enough to take the AFR out of the low 12's AFR.

It just does not work right in its design and if anything, is suited for a speed density car, not a karman vortex car.

the stock paper filter is going to be pretty restrictive and that's never good. You want to reduce every bottleneck so you can move more air through the engine to make more power. That's why everyone starts with air filter, exhaust and a manual boost controller.
