For reference, here is the info from the 03 manual:

DTC P0171: SYSTEM TOO LEAN

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
• If a malfunction occurs in the fuel system, the fuel trim value becomes too large.
• The ECM checks whether the fuel trim value is within a specified range

DTC SET CONDITIONS

I didn't list them here, but there are a bunch of conditions under which the ECM
is getting input from the various sensors and it thinks it needs to crank up either
the long term or short term fuel trims, and it stays out of range for longer than 5 secs.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are: )
• Volume airflow sensor failed.
• Injector failed.
• Incorrect fuel pressure.
• Air drawn in from gaps in gasket, seals, etc.
• Heated oxygen sensor failed.
• Engine coolant temperature sensor failed.
• Intake air temperature sensor failed.
• Barometric pressure sensor failed.
• Use of incorrect or contaminated fuel.
• ECM failed.

DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Check for exhaust leaks.
STEP 2. Check for intake system vacuum leaks.
STEP 3. Using a scan tool ... (now they start testing all the sensors )

Some of the items on the list have already been suggested, but check them all.
I also have started to get this code, and it is bugging me too.
I'll post up if I find something...

I had this a couple of months ago, mine was caused by a vacuum leak.

It doesn't tell you anything more specific than a generic scan tool. After you clear the code, how long does it take for it to come back? Might try swapping mas air sensors with someone for a few days(or until the code normally sets) and see if it still sets. I'v replaced a few mas air sensors (mistubishi that is, you will do that many VW mas air sensors in a month, haha) that would read wrong. Maybe 2 or 3 in the 2 years I'v been doing this.
someone might have said this but fuel filter?? It's not likely at all, unless you get something nasty in the tank.

think its possible for the check engine light to come on because of putting gas in the car while its running? i know some cars set the light off if you fill up while the car is running.

bump... Did anyone resolve their issue with this yet? Im getting the same code and once I get the SES light, my idle drops down a bit. It also requires me to press on the gas more to accelerate.
