I've found that the best way to avoid accidents or near-accident situations is to speed selectively and find a niche between blocks of traffic.

It's ironic - I've had far more "near-misses" when travelling at "safe" legal speeds with morons who think nothing of hitting the brakes too hard with you behind them. These were the few times I violated my following distance rule, so I was at fault for not driving defensively. But let's face it, the moment you let a gap open up, you get another idiot cutting you off from the side. OK, let that one go and open up another gap, and another cuts you off. Sooner or later, you're going to get a dangerous situation behind you where the impatient ***** decides you're letting too many people in and decides to tailgate you with the highbeams on to make his point. Forcing you to abdicate your lane/take evasive maneuvers or whatever.

The point is, sometimes, it's better to just put pedal to the metal and smoke all these idiots jostling for position and find a relatively deserted space on the highway between blocks of traffic. Most likely you will be travelling a little more than the limit, but it's still very safe. Pity the revenue collectors...I mean traffic cops can't see it that way.

If the whole highway is congested of course, you have no choice but to keep a distance and keep alert. Still more unsafe than a little selective speeding to get out of situations.
