The biggest gains seem to come from a turbo-back exhaust. Some people do an intake (if it's a reputable brand with proven gains), some don't and just get a panel filter to drop in the stock airbox instead. The lower intercooler pipe will open things up a tad, or for more of a double whammy (which is the route I took) go for an Injen intake/IC piping kit. Where you go from there is usually personal preference, usually some type of tuning is in order after those few.
My list went like this:
1. Cat-back exhaust/downpipe (I got a slammin' deal on an HKS set)
2. Test pipe (after my emissions inspection...shhh)
3. Injen intake/IC piping kit
4. Lc-1 wideband o2
5. Tactrix cable (to do my own tuning with the datalogs from Innovate's Logworks)
6. Removed boost solenoid pill and tuned the boost through EcuFlash
7. Brian Crower 272 cams
8. Tuning, tuning, tuning

i would get a boost controller instead point 4-5-6. above
o2 housing helps too.
and without brand name the list is alright.
for exhale:
cat-back -test pipe or hfc-downpipe- O2 housing.
maybe cam /$?/
for inhale:
short ram intake or dropp in filter
maybe cam/$?/

boost controller and TUNE.
that would be it for the start . will you give on the IX at least 330 whp /withouth cams/ on dyno jet.

Reason I went with 5 and 6 is because with the pill removed and the full TBE and test pipe I can spike 26psi and hold a steady 22-23 to redline. That's more than enough, and leaves enough room to "de-tune" the boost and still keep the stock ecu's safety features like cold engine boost settings. #4 should be a must have for everyone who plans on modding their car further than a cat-back and intake.
I forgot to mention though in between 5 and 6 I also tossed in a walbro 255lph fuel pump, Evo 8's tend to have an issue with the stock pumps. So before you even get a MBC consider doing a pump upgrade first. Unless of course you want to add another "Help! I just blew my motor up" thread to the site.
