My dad had many sports cars and mini-racing trucks. (almost everything 5 speed). So I was taught to drive (stick) when I was about 14 or so on this old chevy with a built 351 (yes a ford motor). Good times! You'll get the hang of it, just know this, even though it feels okay and the clutch stays engaged while resting your foot on it, that will get you in trouble. Unless your clutching, keep your foot off that pedal!!(trust me, better to make that habit now than later)

EVO+ new young driver= bad combination.
I first drove a "stick" in a car when I was 13. It was a Dihatsu something-something ... a little tiny hatch.
I also drove tractors around a lot (lived on a farm growing up) which have manual transmissions, just different than a normal car. That's where I really learned how to control a clutch. I started that at around 11.
I learned how to "drive" when I was around 19. I had a '00 New Beetle 1.8t and my friend taught me the basics of rev matching and heel-toe down shifting.
I basically had to learn that all over again with he Evo since the AWD drivetrain is much different than the Beetle's FWD. Not to mention the differences in the close ratio gearbox, cable throttle vs. drive-by-wire and pedal layout.
I agree with some posts above ... you are young and have little to no real driving experience. A car like the Evo could easily be very dangerous for you. I highly suggest that you check with your local SCCA chapter to see if they offer any advanced driver training courses you could take. I helped instruct at one last year and honestly learned some things myself ... It could save your life.

I agree, your only 16 bro. I know i know, i wanted an evo whehn i was 16 to, but its good i got an gsx instead, it hung me over for a few years. But if you do get a evo, take a advanced driving class so you dont kill your self or anyone else. Not saying your a bad driver but less experience means better chance to **** up.
First learned stick when I was 16, now 24. Got my Evo at 22.
I really hope you don't get an Evo as your first car. Sorry kid. I know that you probably don't want the thread to shift focus onto your age, but you just opened a can of worms for yourself.

If you do end up with an evo at your age just be smart dont race the kids at your high school cuz u dont prove anything on the streets. if they want to race go to a local drag track and kick their *** there (u can do grudge matches where you ask to go against someone you know). the drag strip saved me from getting in trouble and possible saved my life and others.

Nothing personal, but we've all seen and heard this story time and time again for the past few years.

i got my license and learned to drive stick at 17 (friends MR-2 Turbo). I drove an Auto Lancer es for 2 years. ended up on a curb once. and got my evo at 19.
Heh, funny enough I learned how to drive a stick when I was 17 on my dads '87 Mitsubishi Galant. That car was totally bomb proof. My dad gave it to me to drive in HS, I beat the crap out of it everyday and donated it with 195,000 miles on it and it still ran great. Interestingly the Evo and the Galants clutch pedal felt very similar, both have good takeup and feel. I'm 28 now and can drive just about any stick shift vehicle including big rigs.
