Well its not to early to start planning a head. What does everyone run for winter tires? I'm thinking of either buying some studless winter tires for the stock rims or buying a set of 16 in wheels and putting some studded snows on.

If you want the best tire for the worst conditions look at the Blizzak WS60. AWD and that tire they'll call you Spiderman cause you'll be climbing walls in the winter. On the sport winter side (less snow burden areas more clear roads) the Blizzak LM25 or Dunlop Winter Sport 3D would be good choices.

Good to see you're being proactive instead of reactive on snows. Always better to purchase early than late when it comes to winter tires.

Blizzak WS50 and dont look back!

 

Im also going to be picking up a set of Blizzak's soon but im still debating whether ill drive the Evo in the winter.

 

Do you get enough heavy snow to need snow tires? The Evo is AWD and can handle a snowy winter quite easily with all-seasons. I live in Colorado and have Blizzaks, but they are more than I ever need, and when it's dry, they suck total donkey azz to drive. I do not live in the mountains, so I don't have to deal with deep snow, which allowed me to go the entire previous winter without ever putting on my snows. IF you have to deal with heavy snow, then go for some Blizzaks.

16s are not a good idea, nor are studded snows. You would have to downgrade your brakes to fit 16s.

 

Nokians Hakkas or Green Diamonds for heavy snow and ice...but if you live in an urban area, blizzaks and wintersports at the way to go

 

I went with the Blizzaks LM25 on my stock evo8 wheels, which have been great driving around through a couple heavy snow storms. I had all seasons when I had an eclipse gsx, and never had problems too though, so all seasons might be good enough though depending on the weather in your area.

 

I ran the hakkopilita (sp?) RSis for three years, going to the mountains every weekend, but driving to work in the city. I put over 25k on them before they were down to 6/32nd and worthless for the snow.
Last year I switched to Blizak WS50s, but also went down to a 215/50R17 (I run a 7.5" SSR comp for the winter so they fit fine).

Between the Blizak and the RSis I actually feel like the RSi outperformed it in all catgories. They didn't seem to have as much tread squirm on the street, and even though they were a 235/45 and the blizaks are narrower it seemed like they had less sidewall roll over. In the snow they are both AMAZING, straight line acceleration and braking seemed fairly equal between the two of them. Cornering though the RSi did better then the blizak. I think that a big part of that is that they have sipes at angles in with the directional tread.
If I remember right the new Blizak WS60 has more of a direction tread pattern and probably has a similar sipe design.

The big downside to the nokians is simply the price, I didn't want to spend $800 on a set of them last october since I had just bought two seasons passes and that was already $700 in itself
Bottom line for me though is that next time around I will probably go back to the nokians.

 

You don't need snow tires unless you live in a heavy fallen area! I run falken 912s and have gotten stuck in a PA winter. Also, I don't think a 16 inch wheel combo will fly. They won't fit over your brakes.

 

I run wintersport M3s the older version of the 3Ds in central PA snow and they are don't cut it when the snow really starts coming down. but then again, i'm talking 6+ inches or ice... nokians or some heavy duty blizzaks if you mean business, if its urban, like eveyrone else says, keep it light and simple, it more about hte low temps than the snow that you're trying to watch out for.

 

if you get semi lots of snow I would go with a good winter tire such as Hercules avalanche tire. if you get more very light snow or ice blizzaks is a good choice. Blizzaks are not good for heavy snow though.

 

I have Dunlop Wintersport 3D in 225/45-17 on MR BBS wheels. They're great in the Colorado snow, and not bad in the dry.
