Evo 8 or Evo 9 se/mr

Hey all

Well i just sold my 99 gsx back a few months ago and i have been looking for an evo to buy. I am trying to decide between a evo8 se or evo 9 se or evo 9 mr. I know there are certain issues with the mr 6speed tranny which kind of makes me edgy to buy one. I am used to the 5 speed from the gsx, which wasnt all that great of a gear box. So really im just trying to get some idea's on which one is the best idea to get. Im not that interested in the looks because all 3 look very similiar. Im just looking for performance when adding power. I just want something that will be more reliable. So please leave your opinions. Thanks

ps: im looking for the best to hold the power

Like every thing, it is relative to how you want to drive. Do you want a monster drag car? Than probably go with a 5 speed. Do you want to road race? Than a 6 speed will help keep you in the power band. Now, I will tell you that 03 evo 8's are dipping under $17k and even in some places below $15k, so if you have a budget than that might be the way to go. Do some research and find the differences between the 8 and 9 to see if it is worth it to you to pay the premium for the 9. I have been looking now for 6 months with the same question in mind.

Yes mivec is on 06+

Heres the way I look at it. If you plan on doing major mods to the car, buy a evo 8. Car will be cheaper and leave you with more money to mod. If you plan on just sticking with bolt ons and maybe like a FP green/red turbo swap. Go with the Evo 9.

I've got an IX MR and I love it. I'm so happy I got the 6-speed over the 5. Just more fun to drive in my opinion. The 6-speed trannys aren't "weak" and can handle quite a bit of power. I know of many people that run 500 horse on the stock 6-speed with just an aftermarket clutch. It's all about how you drive though. If you are going to be taking it to the strip a lot and driving it hard day after day, you might be better off with an SE 5-speed, but if it's a daily driver and you're not planning on pushing over 400whp, I highly reccommend the MR.

I believe the 2006 IX SE is the best of the VII-IX generation, but that is just my opinion.

My suggestion, find the best Evo that fits your budget and avoid sunroofs equipped cars.
