Do the lights automatically shut off?

On Sunday morning, I drove home from a friend's house at 7:30am. It was pretty foggy, so I decided to just throw on the side marker lights just so I can be seen from behind. I got to my house a little before 8am, then I went to sleep. I didn't go to work yesterday, and when I jumped in my car this morning after 10am to head to work, I noticed on the turn signal stalk that the side markers were still on. However, the battery didn't seem to have any problems starting the car up (though I figured side markers won't drain a battery), but I figured maybe the lights turn off because I park in front of my house and I think perhaps I'd notice if the side markers were on, especially if it were for two whole days. So do they really shut off, even if the lights are still switched on?

I do believe that when you open the door, if you left any lights on (park lights or headlights) they automatically turn off when the door is open. My 93 T/T Stealth and 93 3000gt did. And I do believe my 03 Evo does also. That would explain why you said your battery didn't show any signs of weakness.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

^ Yeah, I figured it might be, but I'm stuck in my office right now. Thanks everyone for your input.

To bad the radio doesn't shut off automatically. I accidentally didn't shut my car all the way off on the first night I had it(confusing fast key system) and when I woke up I was told that my radio had probably been on all night. Sure enough when I went to start it for work all I got was the clickity-clickity of the sounds of a dead battery. I can laugh about it now but I was banging my head against the wall that morning.

The lights will not shut off if you opened the door, turned the lights on, (no key in the ign.) and then closed the door.

They will only shut off automatically when the key is switched off and the door is then opened.

Your headunit is probably wired wrong. My Alpine HU turns off with the car.
