buying a used evo? bad idea?
The evo X is by far my favorite car. And it's going to be a few years before i can afford one. I was just wondering, would it be better to buy whatever the current gen evo is when i can afford it, or to get a used X. Considering it's a car that gets beaten on a lot, should i bother trying to get a used one in the future?
I personally dont think buying a used evo is a bad idea. It is a car that is beaten around but there are owners out there like myself that dont track their car. If i sold my evo today, the new owner would get a well taken car. Now on the other-hand, there is a good chance of picking up an abused evo.
i think you could find a good used evo 8 or or 9. it may take a while but i bet they are out there. make sure it has a full service history and you take it to have it checked out by someone who works on these cars and knows what to look for.
do a compression test or a leak down, look for one with a stock clutch that grabs fairly well, look at tires for uneven wear to indicate driving habits, check the fluids that aren't usually change to see what level they are at for neglect, etc. Just be smart about it.
Yup, I agree!

I made that mistake. Now I'm w/o an evo. That's the thing about used cars, you never really know the history, & you purchase a 3rd party warranty, but they don't wanna cover anything. You cancel the warranty because of that so the 2 grand applies towards pay-off, then you blow a transfer case, experiance 4th or 5th gears grinds on every shift, discover yer headgasket is leaking oil into no4 cyl causing fouled plug causing missfire, worn brake pads/rotors when you need them are ultra expensive & the vehicle was 5-6 years old w/ 88k miles & were still upsidedown on the loan for more then it was worth!
I went to get a X. Nobody was letting them go for less then 26k. I got into the new Ralliart for 20k (30 otd w/ neg equity/tax/title/ect) w/ more reasonbable payments & still fun as a daily. If you want a total track car, & you could swing the ca$h, definately get the X, but w/ the lowest miles possible.

you just fix the car instead of going out and buying a new lancer

just my opinion....and if you stil have the car ans want to get rid of it lemme no ill buy it.
to the OP.......a used evo is not a bad idea, any performance car is going to have its days thou....biggest thing is compression test.

thanks for all the help guys. I'm still young (19) so my insurance rates would probably be the biggest thing preventing me from getting one atm. When those go down a bit, i'll look into it. right now i'm paying a little over $200 for minimum coverage on a 2002 toyota celica. (2 speeding tickets and an at-fault accident in 1 year) my insurance is gonna be creeping up towards $400 soon too (thanks to the accident)
I got my evo used. The thing is that you can't fall in love with the first one you see. You just have to make sure to look at more than one. It took me about 9 months of searching and looking at different ones until I found a nice unmolested one. You'll find a good one but just be patient.
well both evo's i have got were from dealerships and they were both used i track one and daily drive one the motor on the 8 and 9 are built to take a beating ...anyways both my cars have never given me any problems in any way
