hey, im new to the evo scene. i have been lurking on the forums and doing alot reading. good stuff so far. i just blew the tranny on my supercharged cobalt. after i get it fixed im going to trade it in for a new evo. but i have heard that trannys on the evos are weak cause they have to support 4 wheels. this is just from hear say from evo owners at small meets. so, is the 5 speed tranny strong for aftermarket mods? what is its limit? is this the same tranny as the evo 9 and below? what is the tranny code?

thanks for the help!

First of all your Cobalt transmission broke because its from a bankrupt company lol and I will never buy a GM or Chrysler but thats my opinion lol.

Well if you are going to mod it then yes go with the 5 speed I wouldnt even think MR if you are going to mod it. But the last thing i knew they hadnt quite came up with upgraded MR trannys yet. But there was a shop that was thinking about taking it apart and looking into reinforcing it and throwing in different gear sets.

No its not that its weak because that it has to spin 4 tires. It is just that from the factory they make the clutch weak to save the rest of the car such as the transfer case which is kinda weak on the IX yes. But your tranny should be fine other than the clutch. Which it will give out depending on how you drive and the power. Mine lasted for like 32k miles on my IX. But i have seen some people who lose them at 10k.

IDK about the tranny code and no from what i hear its not the same as the IX tranny. And if you have heard that the tranny is weak it may be the MR tranny but that is the dual clutch system.

I'm not sure about the MT strength, but I think that in the years to come people are going to be surprized at what's possible with the SST. The technology is sound and with a combination of multiple manufacturer support for the getrag units as well as the inevitable aftermarket parts that will be developed for the SST, the power that these trannys will be able to hold is going to skyrocket while the price of modding them well continue to go down.

I think if you plan on modding and you're impatient, you should get a GSR, but if you are willing to wait for the SST technology and parts market to mature, then i really believe that the MR is going to show it's true colors in the coming years.

Just my $0.02.

I really dont think that they are. From what I have been told they are stronger 5 speed transmissions. I read that on one site can't remember which one though sorry.

Lodi has anyone worked on the gear sets for the X MR yet? I swear I have seen a shop that pulled it apart and was going to build it.

From what I know on the MR tranny most say 350 for the sst. For the 5 speeds i bet you can push that thing to almost 600. But thats not the clutch! lol. But if you drive like a maniac which I hope you dont. Ha ha that is for the other "ricer" cars out there lol.

SSP is working on a clutch pack. I'm not sure anyone is working on the gears but I'm pretty sure the only issue with the SSTs holding larger amounts of torque are the clutches and overheading issues. Blitz and SSP both have transmission oil coolers now which address the overheating issues. SSP has produced clutch packs that are being tested by a couple of people/shops before release to the public. The preliminary #s on those, according to the SSP press release, was that they would hold 438lbs of torque at 200F degrees.

i will admitt there not the strongest i have went through one already and my second is getting week but i drive my car and it has 420 awh right now but if u beef up your center diff and get a good clutch u will have no problem up to around 550 i would say but if u plan on dumping ur clutch like a dumb *** then yea ur going to have alot of problem because that isnt what these cars were built to do
