I got the MR because it's got everything in it, and i wanted the 6speed. the MR is the fastest of the group stock for stock, but you do run into problems in the 1/4 mile because of the short 4th gear once you start modding.

Thanks again for some great info...

133K? Holy smokes dat's a lot o' miles! Still going strong huh? Sweet...

Ok... I won't be afraid of the 6 speed.

Ok...

Went and test drove a really nice 06' STi tonight. This was the first STi I have actually driven. Hmmm...

I think I need to go drive another Evo to remind myself what it was I liked so much before (the feel/handling, the interior space, the power output...).

The STi was very fun to drive for sure. It felt very stout and powerful. It looks and feels as if it is built to last.

Just curious... how many Evo's out there have gotten past say 80,000 miles without any major issues? Just curious... (besides ODUB of course)

Anyway, I am still leaning Evo for sure, but the quality of the STi's entire structure is pretty appealing. The Suby salesman brought up that the Evo's turbo cannot sustain 19psi to the turbo on a 2.0 liter engine for long before having issues. I thought this was pretty funny for him to say.

What say you?

Reliability worries or ride quality issues?

On a bone stock Evo used as a daily driver by someone that drives it like a grandma? Most of them.

It's tough to discuss reliability with "tuner cars" because some people have no business working on their cars but they do anyway. Some guys build the motor and then run into drivetrain problems since they didn't take a well-rounded approach to their mods...others are beating on the car by racing them in one form or another.

It's no problem doing whatever you want with your car but you can't compare reliability afterward.

You're again talking about modding the car...

I kept having people tell me how reliable Subarus were and that's why I bought a (non-turbo) Impreza LX in `96. It was bone stock and well maintained but the valvetrain went out at a bit over 100k and basically totaled the car out (I'm not a mechanic).

I'd buy based on looks, price, service and whatever else matters to you. I'm sure they're both good cars.

If you're pretty much planning on staying stock (or even just mild bolt-ons), I bet you would be happy in either one. Just get the one that you can find in the best shape with the lowest miles. Also, IMO unless if you are pushing this car to the limits and driving on track, I doubt you'll notice the handling differences too much between the mr and rs/gsr. I don't think you've said what you want it for, but based on your questions of reliability, I'm thinking of probably just a fun DD. FWIW, I bought my ix brand new and have put ~46k miles on it thus far, it's loud on the highway (I can't hear my cell phone if I put it on speaker phone and put it in my lap or cup holder) but I haven't minded DD'ing it at all. Also, I think the sti has a bit more of an older crowd so its owners tend to be more mature from what I've seen, although maybe I just view it that way b/c I probably see 10 sti's for every evo I see

Salesman is a joke. Stock IX MR runs 20 psi all day! My baby is still running like a champ like the first day I got her.

I was set on an 2006 Aspen White STi until I went by the Mitsu dealership. OMFG, little Miss Wicked White IX MR was sitting there staring into my eyes. I just fell in love with it. I never went back to the Subaru dealership.

I will wait (as long as it takes) to find a nearly perfect Evo IX with low miles.

But, if a an absolutely beautiful 06' STi with all my preferred mods, in a color I love, with low miles and priced correctly surfaces first... I might pull the trigger and not regret it.

We will see...

You nailed it...

I do hope that I find the "right" Evo before I find the "right" STi though...

I too for the longest time wanted an STi, but there's something about the Evo's that gets me. I don't know if I'll ever buy either one of these cars, but if I did I'm 90% sure I'd go with an Evo. Good luck on the search!
