Had my evo 8 for a week and..

my clutch is going, ive been to four different garages and are telling me to get a ceramic clutch, and with this ill need a new flywheel....they say just machining the flywheel wont do.

am i about to get ripped off? do i really need a new flywheel?

depends on how much your flywheel is beat up will determine if it can get resurfaced. I suggest you purchase a used flywheel from another evo member and get that resurfaced so you can have it handy for the shop to put in so they do not try and take you for a ride on the costs of a new one. If you are about driving your car and not beating on your car a exedy factory oem replacement or stage1 clutch kit should do you fine.

How would we know if you need a new flywheel? If you know it's never been resurfaced before, and that there are no horrible cracks in it, then no, you don't need another one. If you lack the ability to do this inspection yourself, then you'll either need to get a used flywheel from somewhere and get THAT resurfaced, or just take the shop on it's word. I guarantee the shops didn't look at your flywheel. If you're not flat broke, consider upgrading to a flywheel whose friction surface can be replaced.

the garage told me the ceramic clutch will need a new flywheel but the organic type will only need machining?

i agree, a ceramic with a new flywheel is a better investment i just wasnt sure if i was getting taken for a ride

Personally I would do a flywheel when doing the clutch. Specially if your paying someone to do it. Then you only have to pay once

how many miles on the car? if the stock clutch went out at 10K miles or something wildly low... leave the stock flywheel.. and put a clutch in that is determined by your goals

stock = exedy replacement
mild = act HD and street disk, or exedy tripuck
above that... MANY options

I'm not sure about your situation and what kind of mods if any...you have installed but if you plan on doing future mods, DO NOT go cheap on clutch/drivetrain parts. Get an exedy twin or cusco twin, they come with flywheels. It will cost more but it will be ten times better down the road and they will essentially pay for itself by not having to replace your clutch every 10 thousand miles.

use/time/abuse/launching, etc...are all factors of what kind of mileage you get out of parts ie clutches. If you are tracking/draging your car...dont expect anything to last long...but if you are just cruising(mostly what I do) and from time to time get on it(not abuse) you will see more mileage out of your clutch. Another advantage is most the twin disc clutches are they are cheaper to replace the discs and thats all you'll need generally if you have a clutch issue. You haven't had your car long..prepare to drop all your money into it...find a evo specific shop and do yourself a favor and put an exedy/cusco twin disc as they come with the flywheel matched perfect to your clutch so it takes out any guess work. They cost more, but it will be worth it...
