How Many is Too Many?
How Many is Too Many?
Hey guys, I've been looking at Evo's (preferably the VIII) for the past couple months in hope of finding the right one. Right now I could probably trade my current car in for ~$13,500 which is a pretty decent chunk that I could put towards a decently priced VIII. It's a shame the price of evo's shot down so much recently, so I figure I should take advantage of it and go out and get what I've always really wanted. So cutting to the chase, how many miles is too many miles for the VIII's, I know it really depends on the way the past owners have maintained it but at what point does the wear and tear on a evo start to get the best of it. Most of the Mitsu dealers I've talked to said it's going to be hard to find a personal/classifieds VIII that hasn't been dogged it's whole life.
Any suggestions?

I always assumed that lower is better when it comes to Mileage on Cars, but On Evo...its hard to say because as u said it.. Previous owner. so U just have to look, n look, look closer and hopefully get a buddy that REALLY knows about car, and maybe own, owned an evo to go with you. good luck with the hunt!!
I would shoot for 60k miles max. It all depends on how long you want to keep it but evo's are really built well and can last wayyyy beyond 100k with basic maintenence. Mayeb around 170k you migh have to rebuild the engine.
OH and your sig^^, You must not be running alot of boost!!! Boost to me feels like im in a ****in g hurricane!!!

it depends how the car was treated during the miles prior to you owning it
the reality - you'll never know this so the lower you can find the better
personally I'd want to stay below 45-50k

just as everyone else has mentioned...lower the mileage the better off you probably are. Also try to find one that has only had one owner. that helps a little....i guess, but again..be smart and look the car over carefully or the best you can.
i got really lucky and found my 06 MR with 38k and was a one-owner car, with zero mods. THAT was hard to find.

if its bone stock, and saw no performance parts, id say 70,000 would be as high as you want to go, but i bought mine highly modded at 54,000, but the parts were put on the last 2,000 miles.
Buy an Evo on these forums, the guys on here treat these cars better than what they prolly deserve.. including me
Alot of the Evos I have seen at "stealerships" have been beaten up pretty bad, plus the dealerships will typically pull mods off of the car so you wont know what has been done to it.

Also, most evos on dealer lots are not trades. They are bought off of auction, and a lot of them come from out of state. And if they are auction cars they are usually repo's, so you never know what the PO did to it before it got taken.
I agree stealerships dont know **** about the cars other than how they are stock. They dont care about the previous owner. All they want is to rip you off and sell you that car, I know a guy that they stealership sold him the car and didnt put oil back in the engine. He requested an oil change and the dumb mechanic forgot to fill it. Now he has a new engine cause of that idiot, I would really have someone look at it with you that has or owns an Evo.
I would also ask for a Carfax report and maitanace records, along with that I would aks for a oil change and an alignment. The reason for that is most owners use the car for AutoX so they might of had coilovers at some point. If you dont you will be using tires really fast and have to pay for the alignment out of your own pocket.

again remember anything wrong with it your going to fix anyways. you can always buy anew longblock etc if you have to. No evo is going to be in perfect condition unless it was just built or something. There are plenty of good ones on this fourm BUT i understand you can get a car loan thought dealership or your bank easier then getting one for a personal car being sold. the bank is going to give you so much the stealership wants to sell the car so they will discount it to push it out that door yes you might get one some some minor issues but as long as your will to put the work into fixing it then more power to you. lots i mean lots of various parts for sale in our for sale section so have a look around
this is very hard, I bought my evo 8 with 57k miles in 05(I didn't know any better) and I never had a problem, I guess I got lucky. I built the engine but because I wanted to at 101k miles. Now my buddy bought a evoMR with 14kmiles for like $25k at the time. He checked the carfax after ,guess what, his car had the tranny replaced twice in those 14k miles. With the Evo you either get lucky or go through hell. The way I see it. By the way I never checked my car's carfax when I bough it, kind of dumb too.

regardless of mileage its going to come down to how the PO treated the car. I've seen cars with less then 10k miles that had blown motors because the owner didn't know any better. then you have cars like mine with 105k on the original untouched stock block that sees the race track a couple times a month...
