Dangers of Blowing Your Motor

I've kind of been curious about this one for a while..

If you blow your motor, spin a bearing or whatever, or it just blows in whichever way.. what are the odds that any of those parts will come flying at you to impale you? There's gotta be some chances of that no?

Blown Evo motors are the second leading cause of death in the country behind smoking!

That's not quite true, although I do agree with you that smoking is the first...it's actually the 4th leading cause of death...there have been two recent dangerous recalls for Evo's, so blown motors would be the 4th.

Probably a bit less than misused pressure cookers and exploding glass bowls in microwaves

I've known people who actually survived doing both...some people just have 9 lives. How long does it take to explode glass items in micowaves?

Depends on the power of the microwave, how long you heat it for and the heating point of water/content in the glassware, usually happens when the heating point is near the outer part and it is taken out into colder air. Huge temperature difference will cause explosion and you will be covered with shards unless the glassware is tempered. If the shattered piece enters artery or heart, the chance of survival is very low.

As for pressure cooker, if you don't get hit by the lid then you should be fine, but you will get a lot of minor to first degree burns from the contents and the steam.

Sub machine gun I think. And I know we've joked a bit here on this site, but here's hoping everyone stays safe and free of these freak accidents...and I really sympathize to those who have been hurt. Someone once told me that there is just a hairline of difference between a disaster and a good story...let's hope we all only have just the good stories in the future!

They also recommend not to heat water, or any other liquid by itself in the microwave. Either add a tea bag, stir stick, or something else, or if you've heated it too much, when you pull it out as you said, the water/liquid explodes in your face...

I thought the real danger from things in the driveline blowing up with parts of the clutch/ flywheel. That is why a serious drag car should have a scatter-shield. From what I understand (and I very well might be wrong) if the clutch grabs very quickly while the motor is producing a high amount of power (as in a launch) and the wheels do not spin but grip hard, there is a chance the high torque can literally shatter the flywheel sending debris right trough the bellhousing, and in the instance of an Evo, right into you. I think this is usually a bigger problem with high output V8s and huge, sticky drag radials but I would think the AWD on an Evo could cause similar problems. Be safe
