X MR owner buys IX MR SE
My E36 M3, that was a money pit. Literally spent >3x the cost of the car in repairs & general track-worthiness. I could have bought a nice Cayman S for what I sank into that car.
Like I said above, I was considering a Porsche, either a Boxster S (late 986 or early 987) or a 911 (996). But, they're still German cars, with P-car premiums. If that M96 engine goes, that's a $15K bill for a replacement.
My wife's Audi, when it goes out of warranty soon, that's a money pit as well. Try $150 for a set of wiper blades, and no, you can't just go buy a match at Autozone.
So, to me, Evos are relatively cheap, as far as cars go. I know they're no Miata, in terms of cheap maintenance, and that their weight means that you go through tires, brakes, etc. more rapidly, but I can handle that. When they break, parts are not that expensive compared to the Germans.
Also, interesting to see all of the "hate" on the thread, as some posters have expressed. I certainly didn't post this to "brag" or anything. I thought that people would be interested in the journey I had in deciding to get an IX even though I currently own an X, and the comparison of the two generations, which I intend to post once I drive the IX for a while.
I could go into how I can afford to buy the two cars, but let's just say that I've worked very hard for what I have, and have made some smart investments, and leave it at that.
I just think it's really interesting that I could have bought a Porsche, or Z06, or something like that, but I chose to buy another Evo. They are just amazing cars, irrespective of price. I will get made fun of by my PCA buddies at the track... "you bought another Mitsubishi??? WTH?", but it's all in good fun. (I'm a PCA track instructor)

9 vs 10
With virtually the same mods, the iX was lighter & faster, with parts more readily available.
Still unable to upgrade the SST trans on my new MR, I miss the reliability of the 5 speed in my iX.
Once ShepTrans upgraded the 5-speed, it was bulletproof and could handle any of my abuse.
Until SST upgrade available, the new X remains my daily driver under 400 awhp.
However, having owned both, the 10 remains more fun for me to drive and enjoy.
Then again, I wish I could afford having both as they are quite different despite many similarities.
Pictures attached. My Evo X MR is in the garage, obviously.
I will write a comparison review soon. I spent the weekend doing some heavy cleaning (pulling the wheels, etc.) and changing filters & fluids. Still need to do an alignment--it's a little off, and imperfect alignments really bother me.
It's a really great car. So different from the X...

I disagree, after a couple of years of following IX prices. Nice IX cars have stayed in the mid-20K range almost since the last one rolled off the lot in 07. The IX is seen as the pinnacle of Evo development on the "old" chassis, before the massive changes in the X, and since it was only made for 1 year, it's going to stay sought-after. A nice, low mileage, well-maintained, unmodified example, that is.
Now, as far as the X is concerned, then you are correct. The X will continue depreciating, and even a "nice" one will not maintain value as long as there are continual improvements to the new platform as the years go on. Of course, if the XI is really a hybrid, then all bets are off...
