X MR owner buys IX MR SE
X MR owner buys IX MR SE
(Yes, this is somewhat of a crosspost, but I figured readers of this forum would be interested)
After I bought my 08 X MR, I was interested in what an earlier Evo was like. So, I went and drove a couple of VIIIs, and wasn't very impressed.
But, I just couldn't get the idea of older Evos out of my head. I read all of the old reviews, bought every Evo book I can find (there's really only two--go search Amazon), read the 4G63t engine book over and over again. I occasionally see VIIIs and IXs at the track, and always ogle them.
A few months ago, a local BMW dealership had a low mile IX MR. I took it for a test drive. After that, I couldn't get the IX out of my mind. The day I decided to buy it, I called the dealership and they said it was sold that morning.
Since then, I've been on the lookout for a nice low-mileage stock IX. I posted a WTB thread. Considered flying out to look at a couple, but never did.
Out of the blue, I get an e-mail from a guy who I had met over a year ago at the track with a GG IX MR SE, wondering if I'm interested. Long story short, we just came to a deal yesterday. Truly bone stock, never modified. 17K miles. Late-production MR (an "SE", but on the MR they call it the "appearance package"). Only tracked twice, and always meticulously maintained.
We should be closing the deal in the next couple of days. I'm very excited. I will now have the best of both worlds... an IX and an X. Now I just need to decide which will be the track car. (yes, I know all about the VIII/IX MR 6-speed failures)
Of course, a nice stock unmolested IX MR is quite rare these days, and turning that car into a track car would kill its value (and take another IX MR off of the road). Maybe I'll just drive it sparingly around town...
Pictures soon.
Oh, finally, for those of you who may ask "why another Evo"? Well, if you're reading this thread, you can probably understand. I was considering something totally different, like a Boxster, but I'm not that excited about German car maintenance after my E36 M3. Wife wouldn't let me buy a Vette (C5 Z06 is what I was thinking). Honestly, I'm just obsessed with the concept of the Evo, and we all understand how "different" the IX and X are, right? (my wife doesn't...)
