I prefer the following when building the engine:
Manley Turbo Tuff Rods (I-Beams)
Wiseco Pistons 1400 HD
ACL Rod / Main Bearings
ACL Thrust Washers
ARP Main Studs
OEM Oil Pump Front Case
OEM Water Pump
OEM Thermostat
OEM Engine Overhaul Gasket Set (OEM (or Cometic etc) Head Gasket)
OEM Belts
L19 Head studs (ARP/AMS/MAP etc)
Perhaps the AMS oil pan as well. Holds more oil and helps keep more oil in the pan.
I also like coatings, i.e. ceramic coatings on the top of the pistons, dry film lubricant on the bearings, oil shedding coating on the rods / underside of the pistons.
I think that's it for the short block build itself, plus a few extras (I don't think I am missing anything?). You should also look at the head. Make sure its flat and not warped. If you have aftermarket cams, consider getting new valve springs/retainers for a little extra assurance and some more performance. I of course assumed, that you have the rest of the parts needed fuel, ignition, etc.

Also, make sure you set aside a few extra $$, because with any build there will be some added expense somewhere.
