Real vs Fake MR?
MR means Mitsubishi Racing, so I could see why the badge might mean something to him. Personally I think it's great your willing to buy your fiance an Evo. That would floor me and I couldn't think of a better gift.
I think your have good advice so far - the VIN is the best bet on determining if the trim is an "MR" trim.
Here is a VIN decoder you can use:

If the decoder says "6 speed", it is an MR.
Good luck with your search - it is getting harder and harder to find a clean well cared for IX MR.

Thanks so much for the advice.
I just want to be certain that the Evo I get for him, is legit.
He does not know I am buying it for him, so I need to figure this out on my own. That is why I stopped by here to ask!
So VIN is the only for sure thing I can know?

here are the specs of the evo. the pictures below are of the 06 evolution IX MR. the picture on top(big) is that of an 05 evolution VIII MR. not the 6 speed, the special badges, gauges, vortex generators, zero-lift kit, etc.

Just to clarify this for the OP. The "air guides" are the pair of ridges just inboard of the water channels on the roof. That is only there on aluminum roofs. I'm not sure if they're actually air guides because I was told they were there for stiffness. Thats
though.
The most distinguishing features of the MR are the factory bilsteins and the 6 speed. No other trim of evo has those. And I'm guessing part of the value of the MR comes from its limited numbers, at least in the VIII's. Not sure of the productions #s in the IX's.

people fake MR's for the same reason Honda people fake Type-R's. because they are morons. Just like the guy with a GTR badge on his mustang in that video that one time.
The easiest way to know is look for the 6speed, and look at the roof. the roof is aluminum and will have two creases, one on each side of the roof near the rain gutters because of the way it needed to be attached to the car. the steel roof will be flat. everything else on the car, wheels, suspension, badges, etc can easily be changed/added.
