Evo as a DD

So the time has come.... I have a C6 Corvette that I am useing as a DD right now and the Wife has a Mazda MX5. My only other car is a 06 eclipse that use to be modded but is now being put to stock to be sold. The wife has been on me to buy a 4 door car.... which sucks because I'm a sports car guy and everytime I drive a "normal" sedan a little bit of me dies inside.

So sense she has given me the option to pick the 4 door car I want I took full advantage to pick a 4door car that meets my sports car status mind in my head..... I know damn my brain for loving to go fast!!!

This is what my picks are as of now. Mitusbishi Evolution, Subaru WRX or STI, Mazdaspeed 6.

This is what I'm looking for. I want the car that gets the best gas mileage out of the bunch, I don't want to spend over 15k for a used one, I want the most dependable one. Pretty simple right... lol

I realize that this is a forum for Evolutions so I exspect people to hate on the other cars. So what I am looking for is everyones honest experiences with your evos and the other cars, if you have any.

Thank you everyone in advance and I look forward to reading everyones posts.

Since you are keeping the C6, I suggest getting the MS6. It will be sporty, yet most refined for a family cruiser.
It's hard to find an unmolested Evo/STi for under $15K.

Quick response thank you!

So MS6 huh. Have you ever had one before?

Yea that is one problem that I have found with trying to find an Evo or an STI... almost all of them have some type of modifacation done to them.

I personally have not been in a MS6, only a regular 6. You will notice that the cabin and trunk space is larger in the MS6 / EVO, than the STi.

As for fuel mileage, I am unsure what the real world numbers are on the other cars. At near 400whp I get between 26-28mpg on the interstate @75-80mph. It has an abundant amount of room for groceries/passengers but it still handles like a go-kart and can handle any type of terrain you can throw at it.
But....finding one with a clear record for under 15k may be difficult.

Good luck!

Thank you again! Wow that is really good gas mileage. I take it you have a bigger then stock turbo? I've heard about a "lean" tune you can do to make the car get better gas mileage at speed. I don't mind the "go-kart" handleing in the car, I'm actually use to it as my eclipse had coilovers and the Vette is a Z51 with upgraded swaybars. Wife doesn't mind either as she is use to her MX-5. All the old farts on Corvetteforums cry about the rough ride on the Z06 and z51 but it has never bothered me.... maybe cause I'm only 27... IDK

I'll have to agree with Blknblu, I think the Speed6 would be your car. Evo/STi's get really poor gas mileage, maybe blknblu has a conservative tune, cause i get 15-16 city 19-20 highway (i would love to get 25-28 haha) Anyhow, if your looking to pay 15 or less for a used one, you'll likely get a later sti or evo, which arent very friendly daily drivers. By that i mean, loud cabin, small trunk, poor speakers, sitting in the seats for long periods of time kinda sucks.. etc. dont get me wrong, i love my evo to death and will cry the day i have to part with it, but thats how it is. Kinda like a Jeep. The experience of driving one out ways the misery of driving one haha.

Good luck with your search!

Have you considered the Golf GTI? That actually might be right up your alley. Much better interior, little down on horsepower but still quick and responsive (I get to drive my friends every now and then.) Even comes with a sporty automatic with paddle shifts.

But just throwin it out there, good luck

Thank you Fat Guy! Yea I have though about a GTI but I am staying away from FWD. My Eclipse is FWD and I was putting down over 330whp and it sucked to get the power to the ground. Also when it snowed it didn't do as good as a AWD car could. So I want an AWD car for my daily. I know a AWD car gets worse MPG then a FWD car. I never said I wanted crazy great gas mileage. What I said is I wanted to look at the cars I listed and compair their MPG.

Two for the MS6. I am looking at that car a little closer now.... though I still love the look of the EVO over the MS6.

Thank you again!

I would lean away from the evo on this one tbh. As said above it is hard to find a used unmolested evo, which could end up hurting the reliability in the long run. I have never personally owned a wrx/sti but know many who love the cars and the reliability/warranty. As for the gas mileage I was getting just below 30 when I had intake/turbo back (catless) and a retune. My gas mileage went to **** with adding the boost controller (car also became a weekend car at that time, so could have just been my driving habits). Were you planning on modding at all? I think that is the biggest factor as with any car; mods will hurt reliability and driveability.

I'm siding with the Speed 6 on this one as well. The 6 is more of a midsize sedan while the evo and sti are both pretty compact. I've owned a 07 STI, own a 06 Evo IX, and my buddy has a 05 or 06 MS6. While I would still rather have my evo (even over a C6), it's because I love AWD for where I live. If I was down south, already had the vette and just needed a cruiser/family car, I wouldn't pick the evo or sti. The back seats are pretty small (STI feels bigger than the evo) and while sporty, neither are very comfortable for long trips. The mazda is a much softer car.

The sti got crappy mileage for a 4 banger turbo ( I think a diesel pickup would do better) and the Evo gets crappy mileage because I'm always putting my foot in it. For $15k your going to be hard pressed to find a nice evo or sti.

If I was in your boat, I would check my local craigslist and just hunt for a deal man. You can find great cars that are way underpriced and perfectly fine. Don't look for something specific, just find something in awesome shape for a great price. You've already got the vette, get the 4d family man car and save some money on it. You might not get a grin from the car but you'll be able to mod the vette or get something you really want with the money you've saved. I know if I was in your shoes and went and bought an evo, it wouldn't be very long before I started buying parts for it.

One other option.... sell the vette and pickup a nice evo ix, drop a few grand in it and have a vetteslayer.... I've only got a few grand in mine and it handles as well as a vette and will blow away c5s, and probably keep up with c6s. (never raced a c6 but I ran faster on all season tires than a gt500 mustang at my local 1/4 track,

Out of the options listed I would have to agree with the MS6 for more of a family car

I don't suggest the MS6, they are by no means even close to the STI or Evo in terms of performance, stock for stock.

I suggest trying to find a used 08-09 WRX to play with, an 09 will have 265hp and 0-60 in less than 5 seconds stock, and they'll be much easier to find stock than an Evo or STI, especially one around 15k. Solid DD and performance car, but it might be cutting it close with the 15k limit...You'll prob need to spend 18-19.
