Evo 8 or 9 for 500whp build?

I've been out of the scene for a few years and want to sell my vette to get into another evo. I want something i can work on more and the evo has much more potential to be a street terror. Hell my vette spins through 1st and it's just about stock.

My question is what car should i start with to reach my goal of 450 on pump and 500+ on e85? I realize this is pushing a lot of stock components but will the 8 or 9 hold up better?

I've read alot about the 6 speed in the 9 being weak. Are they really that bad? How much more power is the Mivec going to give me when i'm swapping the cams anyway? Anything i'm missing?

Go with an EVO VIII for sure. More options available. Better trans. Etc.

EVO IX is a one-year wonder.

Evo IX with a 5 speed. (Only the 8 MR and 9 MR came with the 6 speed)

The Evo IX will outshine the VIII with your goals but once you start getting into a built motor and thousands in suspension mods, the benefits will start to become less apparent.

The Mivec will give you more options with tuning. Keep the torque numbers low (350-400) and your motor should hold together fine and still reach that 500hp goal.

Keep in mind, the Evo IX is a newer car. The price tag may be a little higher but chances of finding one in decent shape are greatly increased.

There are plenty of threads about the pros and cons. Just spend a little time before you make your decision.

Apparently i got moved into the Newbie forum, lol. I'm sure there are plenty of comparisons out there, just looking for real world experience with the MR 6 speed transmission.

cant lose either way, but like stated above keep the torque down or you will have major problems...to be quite honest i'd stop at 450 period with stock block and head...build that biotch if you want 500 all day

This is strictly a "fun car" so if the motor blows i'll build it the next winter. I'm planning on all the usual bolt-ons and an FP Black. Should do 450 to the tires on an easy 93 tune and 500 on E85. I'll set up the map switching like i did in my old evo. E85 only on the weekends and when i'm taking the car to the track. The plan is to run it like that for a year or so and build a stout short block so i can really turn the wick up. It seems like i want the 5 speed for sure, it is getting hard to find clean 8's though.

You cannot go wrong with either but if I were to vote, I would get the EVO IX with 5-speed. As for your 450whp goals on pump/93 with the FP Black, no issues there. As for torque, like has been said, keep things in that 400wtq area and when you are getting tuned, ensure that your peak torque comes on later (i.e. in the 4,500 RPM) range as those violent torque spikes are what puts a nice window in the block.
