Evo 8 new owner and new home

Hey what's up? My name is Matt and I recently just picked up a 2005 Evo 8. I'm new to the Evo and just have a few questions and if anyone could help it would be much appreciated. I drove all the way from Great Falls, MT to Portland, OR to pick up my Evo. I bought her with the following mods that I can see. Hyperflow intercooler, RC injectors, 255, O2 housing, Turbo XS MBC, Forge DV, and 3 in. exhaust. The car is currently running speed density and since picking it up I've also installed a Hallman MBC and ETS LICP. Whenever I go WOT, only a couple of times, she'll have like a boost surge where the car will loose boost and then regain it a couple of times(boost was only set around 1.4 bar). I've since lowered the boost, down to 1.1-1.2 bar, and haven't had any problems. I've installed all new T-bolt clamps and checked all the couplers and I'm not sure if it's just a bad tune. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also I want to post some pics to see if anyone knows anything about this car. It was bought in Portland, OR but the Carfax says it was last owned in Vancouver WA. Thanks guys!

Thanks evo8dreamcar. I've searched around the forum and was curious as to what would be the easiest way to test these without taking the turbo off the car. Thanks!

Thats not a tubular manifold. Looks like a stocker without the heatshield. Get a heat shield to through back on there. Should cut down on engine bay heat soak, and help out with spool.

You really need to make or purchase a boost leak tester, and do a boost leak test. It sounds like you either have boost leaks, or a pre turbo exhaust leak. Other than that it looks good.

When your out getting the stuff to make your boost leak tester, pickup a can of Aerosol Hairspray as well. I spray the inside of my couplers with it, works great to get them to seal up good.

I'd also go ahead and get some new t-bolt clamps to replace those worm gear clamps on the UICP. Those tend to suck for boost. Plus looking at how the clamps on on the couplers, you probably have some boost leaks on the UICP. I allways had best luck with using the clamps right at the ends of the couplers, just past the lip on the pipe. If your intercooler pipes don't have lips/beads they need em!

Sorry I should have clarified. I meant the previous owner may have had a tubular manifold and the heat from that may have caused the resin to crack on the hood. I'm actually going to do a boost leak tester this weekend. I do have a little exhaust leak either between the manifold and the turbo or on the O2 housing to the turbo not sure. I seafoamed it when I got it and then changed all fluids and had a little smoke coming up through the hood vent when I was stopped. Also I have since replaced all clamps with T-bolts and used hairspray on all of the couplers before making this thread. Thanks

Also check the vacuum hoses behind and under the intake manifold. They like to slip off.

I will definitely check that tomorrow. I'm not sure if the gauge is off, but the stock boost gauge sits at around -40 to -50 at idle. Is that showing a vacuum leak by any chance?

Looks like you have a good idea of whats going on then.

To me it sounds like the leak you found when you seafoamed is the most likely culprit for it not holding steady boost.

Just wanted to update. I replaced the plugs from the Autolight Iridiums, I bought when I did a full service the day after I bought it, to NGK BR7ES and the problem has been fixed. I didn't know those plugs were junk until I started reading about them. Thanks guys!
