Thinking about buying an 03 evo VIII

I'm considering buying my coworker's 03 evo VIII. I haven't looked it over yet, but I know it has 33,000 miles, and he wants $16.5k for it. I'm pretty sure it's stock, and he is the second owner.

What do you guys think? KBB values are 19.3k (excellent), 18.9k (very good), 18.5k (good) and 17.1 (fair).

I'll do some searching around the forum to see what I should look for, and what issues there are with that model. If you guys could point me in the right direction towards any good threads I would also appreciate it.

I assume none of the stock parts should need replacement at this mileage?

One of my hesitations is I just bought an 01 camaro about 4 months ago, but if I can sell that for what I paid I'll consider the evo more seriously...

Have a reputable shop check it out and then jump on that price.

That's what I figured. Is there a FAQ on these forums of things to look out for, or common problems these cars have?

Only 33K on a car that is almost 10 years old? Something doesn't sound right there. If that is true there should be zero wrong with it. Then again it could have blown a motor and that is why it has the low miles. It sounds too good to be true to me.

I'll talk to my coworker tomorrow about it.

My coworker is 34, and bought the car 4 years ago with 22k miles. It wasn't his DD, so he only drove it ~3.5k miles a year. I'll talk to him tomorrow to find out info on the previous owner, and tell him to bring it to work so I can see it and drive it.

Assuming (big assumption I guess) that everything is in good condition, no accidents, clean title etc, what would the going rate be for that car? Do evo's typically sell for above or below kbb?

Thanks for everyone's input, I appreciate it.

I saw the car today, but didn't drive it. He has a friend who is probably buying it unfortunately. If not, I'm pretty sure I'll pick it up after I drive it. It also actually has only 28k miles. It also has snow tires on it, so after the winter I'd have to get new tires.

It also has a few mods. He said it has lower and upper intercooler pipes, and perrin turbo back exhaust. He has a turbo timer installed, and that might be it. It hasn't been tuned.

It may have a BOV, but I'm not sure. Is that bad for the engine? I've heard you should stick with the stock DV, but wasn't sure what kind of damage (if any) could happen if you use a bov. He said it was at stock boost pressure.

If you don't buy it, contact me and I will. I hate to see low mileage EVO's.

Stock or modded, doesn't really matter as long as it was assembled correctly and tuned corrcetly. maintenance is also the main key.

Good luck on it, I would try and get it before his buddy does if your really serious.
