Buying an Evo X GSR
Buying an Evo X GSR
Im planning on buying an Evo GSR with 38k miles 2008 for 26,000$ its clean no accidents or anything.
My problem is: 80% of people are telling me that they aren't worth buying because the MPG sucks and they break down a lot you also get tired and bored of them pretty quick i don't know how true this is.
I talked to 2 mechanics and they told me they always break down and he always or they always have them at the shop.
I wanna talk to someone who owns one and can tell me their opinion or opinions on it.
I'm only 20 years old so I don't know if i am to young for so much power or what ever i work a full time job and i work really hard so i wanna buy a car that's actually worth working for where i live it snows a lot and rains and lots of paved roads so if you guys can post your opinions here it would be great.

The price seems high for 38k miles. Why not get a new GSR for a few grand more?
The point of an EVO is to burn a lot of gas so you have a lot of power. Then your are supposed to mod the car so you burn even more fuel and have even more power. If you want a fuel efficient car, get a Civic or something similar. Having said that, fuel efficiency isn't that bad. After my mods and my tune, my X GSR gets 26 mpg freeway and 18-20 mpg city. That's decent mpg IMO. When I drive it hard I can get a low 12 mpg.
An Evo isn't a car that beaks down all the time. They are one of most durable cars available. They are designed for high performance rally racing. If you are using it for normal daily driving, you will not have any issues. Some people beat the crap out of their evo and never have any issues. Some people mod their cars on a cheap budget and the problems they have are user error, not the cars fault.
If you can afford an Evo X GSR, get one and you will be very happy.

thanks i'm not worried about gas really i'm just worried about breaking down part i mostly want the evo cause i wanna drift on snow and stuff like that i was born in siberia/russia where it snows a lot. but now live in usa where is also snows a lot during winter. I drive about 100 - 300 miles a week.
Im only 19 and I just recently purchased my 08 evo x gsr for 23,500 with 43k. I absolutely love it, its completely stock for now and i was getting 30mpg going 70mph on the highway and 21mpg city. You say it might be too much power but its not at all.. You'll want to start modding it and doing everything and im starting to learn you get what you pay for and each performance mod will make a pretty good gain. I wanted an evo because its safe, awd, updated interior, looks nice, rides smooth, good road trip car and is fast. Its everything you could ask for. You wont be dissapointed.
With decent snow tires, or all season tires, the Evo is excellent in the snow. The all wheel drive system in the Evo X is incredible. It's one of the safest cars on the road IMO.
Like anything you buy that is quality. As long as you take care of it and do the proper maintenance, it will last without any issues. The Evo is probably more forgiving than other cars regarding hard driving and abuse, because it was designed for racing.
If you mod the car, don't be cheap about it. Get decent parts and find an experienced tuner. If you want to do the bare bone mods, all you need is a high flow cat, exhaust and a tune. This alone will open the car up for some decent power gains and it will sound like an Evo should. From here with mods, the sky is the limit.

The if it will beat a mustang GT is too subjective of a question. Will it be more fun to drive and more versatile than a Pony GT? Definitely!
I bought my 08 gsr with the sight sound and spoiler package for $26.7k five months ago. It only had 27k miles and had an oil leak at the timing chain cover. I guess its a common problem with the early production 2008 models. I say get a car that u want to do payments on. I would hate to do payments on a car the wasn't fun at all.
a 5.0 GT would probably come down to the driver until you pass 100 then the extra hp of the gt will come in handy...an older GT SHOULD be a cake walk..agiain until the higher speeds...good luck man...my dad grew up in Siberia by the way but I grew up in Uzbekistan...everyone got the F out after the collapse
Evo's are very reliable, I know a few people who have daily driven 400+hp evos with no issues, and plenty of members on here make great power while retaining reliability. As others have said its all about not being cheap and doing things correctly. A stock evo will be just as reliable as a honda or any other vehicle so no worries there.
Gas mileage is mediocre. I get 22-24mpg highway and 15-17 city on a bone stock 2011 gsr. Some have claimed higher, others are right in the same ballpark. Gas mileage is not excellent but the return you get from the car makes it worth it. Also the gas tank is fairly small so expect more trips to the gas pump.
I feel like the 08 you're looking at may not be the best deal you can get. Personally I would try to find the lowest mileage possible. And also 08's had the most issues from the factory that needed addressed which have been supposedly fixed in later models.

Evo's are also one of the most expensive cars to insure. Especially given your age expect to pay astronomical amounts.

Is the car at a dealer? You can probably talk them down some. 26k isn't the BEST deal, but it isn't terrible either.

Are you asking Subaru owners?
An Evo is actually quite reliable- If you do the maintenance and don't drive like a crazy person. Maintenance is kind of expensive though. Brakes and tires wear out quicker than normal cars. Routine maintenance seems to come up all the time. But this is normal for a PERFORMANCE car. This is not a Corolla. Gas mileage isn't terrible, well I guess it is for the normal 4cyl, but its not a normal 4cyl. 17-20 in the city is usually what I see depending on how it is driven. Around 23-25 highway. They do not break down very often as long as you don't put any cheap mods on that compromises reliability or straight up abuse the crap out of it.
Also, the idea that you get bored quickly with an Evo is laughable. There is a reason why half of the people on this forum have sold their Evo to "upgrade" to something like a BMW 335i and always come back. It's just not the same. Their just aren't other cars that perform and drive like an Evo.. Unless you have 90k laying around for a GTR.
I talked to 2 mechanics and they told me they always break down and he always or they always have them at the shop.
Haha. Do they work at STM- I see you are in NY. This just sounds like a know-it-all mechanic who has no clue about Evos.

I know what you mean. I bought my first Evo when I was 19. It was probably a bad idea.
It was a 2.3L built Evo 8. Prolly too much power at the time honestly, but I loved it.
A stock X, especially a 2008, isn't all that fast. The 2008's stock tune was SUPER rich and slows it down a tad. But that can be fixed with an aftermarket tune for about $500.
The Evo is great in the snow with the proper tires.

Stock 5.0's usually put out around 370whp 350wtq..
Stock X's now are going to be about 100whp less than that.
To me though, driving an Evo and having AWD is funner than just straight line speed. It's all preference though. Both are pretty sweet cars. Besides the fact that you see a new Mustang about every 5 minutes..
yeah well thanks a lot guys now i gotta go out there and start looking till April my budget is about 25,000$ im gonna try really hard to get 2010 Evo x i want about 40k miles or less idk if that's a good offer
