But what the guy was saying was that the money that you could spend all at once to avoid paying interest could be invested toward something else, with an expected return of a certain amount that would be greater than what you'd be paying on interest and then some.

I've always worked off of final price. If you have good credit you can always refinance. So it doesn't really matter what interest rate they offer you. For example.... They'll give you a "special price" if you take it at a certain apr. If you like the price take it then just refi at your local credit union. Most loans don't have a penalty for paying off early. Just my 2 cents.

But you just have to be careful with that because for loans of this type, remember that the chunk of your monthly payment that goes toward interest is larger the closer it is to the start of your loan. You can download a number of apps for your cell phone where you can punch in your loan amount, your APR and the length of your term, and it shows you a breakdown of how much of your payment goes to what. So while sometimes it might sound good to go from a 5% rate to a 2.9% rate, it will really depend on how far you are into your rate to determine if you are really saving money. It's a little different when talking about homes though, with it being a much, much larger purchase over a much longer period of time.
