First mods!

Hello all!

So I've bought my first evo saturday! I though: I won't mod it this summer I will wait next one... LOL It took me 2 days and I was already looking to make it looks better and make it faster XD

I'm 19 only, and a programmer, so I'm not such a beast in mechanic at all... BUT I,m willing to learn. I want to learn more and more about evos.

I have some questions about few mods...

1. What intake do I need to hear my bov (I want to keep the oem one)
2. How much $$$ would it cost me?
3. I might participate to a "show-off" car thing near where I live (mostly honda fans lol) and I want my motor to look nice, where could I find some hoses package to make it looks good?
4. How much?
5. Is it hard to change?
6. I may consider buying a tbe, it looks like it's many different pieces? I don't get it? (I have acd)
7. How much does it cost?
8. Which one make the better sound and better gain?

I'm always open to ideas to make it looks better

Alexandre!

Holey Buckets!

First... welcome.

To answer your questions...
1. Slow down. You're probably better off learning your car as it is than just dumping tons of money into it with no real goal.
2. If you want to hear your diverter valve, put a cone filter on. You don't need a full intake, and I'd probably actually recommend against a full intake. The MAF on the Evos is notorious for disliking (randomly) intake hoses other than stock. So just buy a filter with an adapter, and bolt it up.
3. An engine dress up kit is probably not a great idea. On a turbo car, especially one running the boost levels the Evos are, the hoses are pretty critical. Switching to some of the colorful ones can sometimes result in the hoses being weaker, and for someone that isn't super experienced with boost, or cars in general... you may find yourself causing more harm than good.

You CAN however clean up your engine bay by using the conventional methods. With all of the bling already in there from mitsubishi, you'll find that it cleans up pretty nicely.

The one thing I might suggest would be to swap the intercooler couplings from the stock webbing, to silicone. But it's probably wiser to decide whether or not you plan to upgrade your IC pipes, as the couplers you need may change...

4. Regarding a TBE. There are plenty. All of them offer different benefits. Weight, powerband, peak HP, noise, smog legal, etc. You'll need to make that decision on your own, again... based on what you're trying to achieve.

They do come in pieces. The exhaust system on the Evo goes like this.
1. Engine block (where it starts obv)
2. Exhaust manifold.
3. Turbo.
4. O2 housing. (this is not considered part of a turbo back exhaust fyi. It is a separate component)
5. Downpipe.
6. Test pipe, or catalytic converter.
7. Cat back.
8. Muffler.

Pricing on everything will of course vary by where you're shopping... but start by checking out the for sale section, or searching on Google. There are plenty of fantastic shops/tuners around to get parts from.

If you have questions... shoot em up!

just learn to enjoy and respect your car as it is for now. people usually do the bolt ons for starters. drop-in filter or maf adaptor and cone filter, for an x do the UICP, downpipe, HFC or TP (HFC is quieter) and the CBE along with a higher output fuel pump, 3-port boost controller and a tune. Oh, get a boost gauge too.

Lancershop.com sells silicon coupler replacement kits, they have i think a black and a blue one. i would go with the black one. it might be just for the 8 but you should check.

Driver mod. Learn to drive it first. Learn how to make it stop fast and hard. Learn heel and toe. Learn how the car handles under different situations.

I should've stressed more.

Go run some autoX or track events. People are always quick to mod these cars, and frankly... there's a WIDE gap between throwing parts at a car, and PROPERLY choosing parts for a car.

After you learn the car, you'll learn what you'd like to improve. Everyone is different.

I always tell people that this car ran 8:11 around the nurburgring. When you can run 8:11... you can start modifying it.

My first mods made me very happy with it.
Buschur SCCA bullet cat-back
STM test pipe
Megan downpipe
Walbro 255 fuel pump

I also bought an STM intake and HKS blow off valve, both were unfortunately. The intake didn't fit, it pushed down on the lower rad hose raising my intake temps, not sure why because quite a few people have these without issues and the HKS bov is garbage. Sound isn't everything. I just now switched to a Tial QR bov and will be getting my intake from Tscomptuned. Driver mod and a simple list/tune will get you pretty far to start.

Speed element OMG filter, doesn't even need a maf adapter and at $45 I think, doesn't break the bank either.

i have the speed element filter and it is really nice. i bought it because you dont need an adapter and its a dry type so you just wash it off to clean it.

Yep if all you want to do is hear the bov just get an adapter and cone filter.... Amsoil is one of the better filters .... You can also pick up a exhaust later on down the road off ebay for cheap alot of guys on here have had very good luck with them. Goodluck modding
