How did you afford your EVO X?
Getting help buying and maintaining the car from your family are definitely good things but just be prepared for the unexpected costs and I'm not talking about insurance, mods or routine maintenance like others before me, an example would be if one of your tires blown on the sidewall after a year, then you're looking at replacing all 4 and that'd probably set you back close to 4 digits.
Seems like you've pretty much decided on doing this already so good luck on raising the rest of the money, hope you get the experience you wanted out of this

thank you once again!
I am 29. Bought the 2014 Evo X for $34,000 and put 10k down payment. Sold the 2013 kawasaki ninja ZX6R 636 motorcycle and got tons of mods and aero kits for the evo. I pay $62.22 a month for full coverage + 250 Deductible + Free Glass + Free roadside assistance. I can afford this because i work 40hrs a week and got a VERY supportive girlfriend / future wife that helps when ever i need it.
By the way, Aim for a higher model.. it would be better maint. wise.

I have an 08 evo x I'm thinking about selling
Was thinking about selling it. 17k or so. Tons of mods too.
tl;dr: Money. Money. Money. Time. And money.
December 2013: Went into a dealer, asked them to check my credit score. 590. Left with a mirage. Sounds crappy but, 40 mpg made it easy to save money. They told me come back in 2 years and I could get an evo no problem.
June 2014: Heard about the evo being dropped and I absolutely did not want a used one. Decided to give it a shot, got denied. I was told there was no way it would happen. Did some research online, started massive "quick fix" credit repair. Did pay-for-delete on 1, paid off a repo, and disputed the final one. Also opened a credit card with capital one. A mere $300 limit.
July 2014: I tried again, got told no again. Traded the mirage for a camaro at the Chevy dealer down the road. The big deal here is the mirage was under consumer financing, a fancy word for high risk financing. I managed to get the camaro under a regular bank which helped tons.
October 2014: Same Mitsubishi dealer. They remembered me and told me it was unlikely based on my previous attempt. I insisted they try. Got the evo, under a credit union, with a 2.9% APR.
Persistence, dedication, and a stack of money. I burned a lot a negative equity, about 5k. I got about 1k off, so all said and done I basically paid 4k over sticker and got it done. Some people say it was stupid, and I guess it was. But it's my dream car, and it was going away. To me, it was worth it.
P.S. Credit score is 700 now.

I think the most important aspect of this whole buying process is to really find out if you can afford everything ELSE that comes with the car, and not just the car itself.
I put $7000 as down payment and financed the rest.
The car cost $34,000 but with taxes and fees it ended up being close to $40,000.
Depending on driving record and age, insurance will most likely be ****ing pricey as hell too. I pay $200 a month for that ****.
The car also drinks gas for breakfast so expect to pay a crap load for that.
Also the saying "If the car is driving too smoothly, something is going to break soon" actually proves itself true with the EVO, so expect to pay for that as well. But if you drive it nicely and protect the car you shouldn't have problems. HOWEVER with that said, it IS an evo and it was made to be driven hard.
Total in all I pay around $800 - $900 for the car a month. Not very cheap at all.
I have a decent paying job but I still have to save money for other expenses so at the end of the day Im basically living paycheck to paycheck because I live by myself and cover all costs.
Not trying to discourage the people who want to buy EVOs, just want to share my reality and probably many others' reality of owning an EVO.
But at the end of the day the thrill and happiness I get from driving it and owning an EVO makes up for all the heartbreak when I look at my bank statements, so for me its worth it. I wanted an EVO ever since I was 14 and at 23 I have one now, it might not be the best choice for me right now LOL but **** am I glad I did it. Well worth it.

back in 2009 I sold my VW GLI for about 17-18k and took trip over to California. I had a plan to buy an EVO IX at the time but, when I got to the dealership the at South Coast they were giving me a better deal on the new 2008 X than a used IX. It helped a lot that that I had/have a good credit score and my down payment was so high. My dad was kind enough also to put in another 5k...it helped drop my payment just a bit more.
Think I was paying 271 a month for my Evolution X when I had it.
Cost of the car was $37,000 for my 2008 X w/SSS
