Differences between evo engines and trans?

What’s up guys, newb question, I’m looking at buying an engine and trans tomorrow for my car, and was wondering how can I tell what it is exactly, the guy is telling me it’s out of an mr, but doesn’t have any other info, I just don’t want to buy an old 4g63 with a burgundy valve cover lol thanks for any help it’s appreciated!

MR engine is no different from other evo's. The trans however will be a 6 speed if it's from an MR

Like he said, the MR came with a 6-spd. The 6-speeds have issues with 3rd/4th gear being weak (ask me how I know). Lots of people end up swapping their MR's to a 5 spd. If you go from 5 to 6 spd, or from 6 to 5 spd, you will need a kit to change over the shifter linkage, but other than that they both bolt up to the 4G63. No adapter plate needed.

Yea I went to go look at a swap but ended up being 96-98 evo 4 or 5 not sure, it was advertised as an ‘mr’ swap, in pics the valve cover looked burgundy, got there it was red, my mind was probably playing tricks on me lol thanks for the info!
