Lindsey, usually it's a head on impact, I think at about 20-25 MPH or higher. I believe a rear impact could cause them ot pop too, if hard enough. Glad to hear you are okay!!
Yes, it has to be head on, typically 20-30 MPH depending on what you're impacting with. There's actually a force transducer that determines whether to deploy or not, and an offset collision like that wouldn't do it.
