It just seems as if the EvoIX is a temporary layover until we get the EvoX.

It's kind of the way it's been in the past. The I, II, and III were similar (I believe), then the IV, V, and VI were similar in looks, and the VII and VIII are also similar in looks. It only seems logical that the IX will be similar to the VII and VIII. Then the X will break from that.

The first three were on the same chassis. CE9A
The IV had a different designation (CN9A) then the V, and VI (CP9A) but it wasn't as big a change as you are making it out to be. For all practical purposes IV, V, and VI had virtually the same chassis.
So it isn't unprecedented for three Evos to share a chassis CT9A. Especially considering the money crunch the company is in.

I'd agree even it's just speculation. But boosting Mitsu' image?...O...yeah....I think there is not another time like now that Mitsubishi Motors needs to boost its image....and not only here in the U.S. but also homebase Japan.
Why? Read the today New York Times articule.

So, I won't bet money on the Evo 9 to have major major technical improvements...given the current Mitsubishi financial zhit hole it is in now although MIVEC is very likely because it is an existing part in Mitsu's bin already and the engine change over would not be a major surgery since except for us every EVO in the world have turbo-charged MIVEC motor.
Well, also hopefully, given the current financial zhit hole Mitsubishi Motors is in now, that will give us customers more negotiating power when it comes to buying a Mitus car.
Another very likely possibility is that Mitsubishi Japan would just punish us for re-electing Bush by sending us Evo 9 with Hyundai motor with a Buick suspensions with VW electronics.

I would tend to agree that I-III were essentially the same, but the difference between the VI and the V/VI chassis are quite noticeable. It was in the EvoV that the car was first given its wider track, rims, and tires (to improve handling), and as a result, the wider fender flares - if you take a look at older Evos, you'll notice that I-IV didn't have those signature flares that set it apart from the normal Lancer.
Well, I guess the thing is I would have expected at least minute improvements in the chassis - given that it is nearly 4 years old now - though, if it keeps Mitsu afloat, then I can't complain!
