Go out and drive a DSG?
It seems VW is running an ad campaign on its new GTi. Hey, it has the DSG system in it.
Why not go drive it? My VW dealership were eager to hand me the keys (Over the phone lol). I'm probably gonna go this weekend.

I testdrove one yesterday. Honestly, its a nice alternative to an Auto and you can definitely feel the clutches working but, I guess the car itself had too much bodyroll in the twisties for me to enjoy it.
The features on the new GTI's make them feel like a high end car. I would definitely get one as a daily driver but I'd probably hate to be in one on the track.

I got to drive a new GTI this last weekend and I was very impressed as to how quickly the car shifts, the power is very smooth from gear to gear - very seamless transition. I will agree on the body roll. I gave the car a quick side to side with the wheel and it felt like it was going to tip over :P
the dsg gets a thumbs up in my book...but i think i would still rather have 5/6spd manual.

When driving the GTI you have to remember it's not built to compete with cars like the EVO and STI so it will have more body roll. It's supposed to be sporty, yet refined and comfortable. It is a great car for the money and if you want to eliminate body roll it's only a set of good coilovers away. You can not go wrong with the 2.0T FSI engine with the DSG. If you look at what the APR flash does http://www.goapr.com it's very easy to get 250whp/300wtq out of the car. Amazing all things considered....

I drove one a few weeks ago and it was amazingly smooth and you had to really pay attention to even tell the car was shifting. The best auto I've ever driven and it's far better than the M3 SMG I drove. That said, I was bored out of my mind 5 minutes into the testdrive. It was like playing a video game when using the paddles, minus the fun of playing a video game...

As for the body roll, the GTI has always been notorious for 3-wheelin', but it'll stick pretty well once it transitions to that state.
I may be "testing" one at Deal's Gap soon. A friend with strong VW/Audi connections is working to hook me up with a review mule...
Well I finally got to drive the new GTI with DSG. I assumed I would hate it, but I was mistaken. DSG is astoundingly good. Up-shifts were perfect, down shifts we even better. All of a sudden I felt like a pro… And then it hit me, this really is the future.
If you are bored driving DSG it’s you, not the tranny. It will do whatever you ask it to every time, and every time it will do it flawlessly. How can anyone tire of that? The fact is that once you better understand the art of driving DSG is revealed for what it truly is…. Brilliant!
I will confess my left-foot was feeling lonely because it had been left out of the fun, but as I approached a hairpin turn at breakneck speed and downshifted two gears lower to power out of the corner, I was astounded to find that DSG left me with the same feeling I have when I hit that corner in a manual car… I felt like a rock n roll hero, like a superstar that have just given the performance of a lifetime. The only thing is with DSG you are able to repeat the performance whenever you want. It nails that tune every time.
I will still test drive both the manual and the DSG versions of the X just for the heck of it. But if the X’s DSG is anywhere near as good as the VW’s I may have to say goodbye to the clutch.
One important note: When you drive the VW make certain that you push the gear leaver to the right. This will engage the full DSG mode instead of the default Auto/DSG mode that will shift for you.
Given the timing of the release of the X the Mitsu might be competing with VW’s own R36 Golf… That will really be interesting.

i drove an A3 with the v6 and the dsg, and i too was skeptical at first, but man is it amazing. perfect upshifts, awesome downshifts. it would require a lot of energy to shift that smooth ever single time. its really amazing. by no means is it an automatic.
