So what do all the big tunners think of the X?
Do you think Mitsu really reinvented the wheel with this new motor? Not to be a punk, but ~325lbs/tq @ 3000rpms from a 4 cylinder isn't something to look down upon
cast iron is so 20th century... aluminum engines can hold much more power than you think. if you don't agree than call up on donovan engineering, and ask what they're all aluminum small block chevy 400 motors can withstand... you might be surprised. don't forget about being a better heat conductor, lighter, and most importantly, i've read that it's sleeved from the factory anyway
yeah i absolutely hate when i have more room for bigger turbos, less exhaust piping (and weight), and an easier time with routing cold air via hood ducting, damn the man!
although i'd like to say something smartass to this, it's true. oh well, get better tools, or grow smaller hands
you say this like nobody's going to jump on the chance to make power out out of the X... if you want to talk about new engines putting a bad taste in tuner's mouths, then take a stroll to any bmw 335i forum... n54 tuning is already WELL on its way, and BMW tuners are much fewer and far between than mitsus....
the X is going to be a great platform, the only problem i see is the curb weight... ~3500lbs is a heavy pig.

@evo_what
The Evo X will have an aftermarket. The Cobalt SS did when it debuted and it was a completely new product/design--hell, it's less popular than the very namesake of our Evolution, but it still got an aftermarket.
How is any Mitsubishi/Dodge/Hyundai car unreliable? You have the same maintenance responsibilties as with any other car: change oil, wheel alignment, tire pressure, etc. Plus you get a warranty.

I've really tried to avoid posting in these types of threads for a long time, but for some reason I can't go silent any longer. 90% of the people posting in these threads are talking out of their *** and are just regurgitating nonsense they heard from some other moron. Don't look around; I'm talking about YOU.
A couple points:
Aluminum has a bad rap from a long time ago and it has stuck around since. Yes it's true, Al has had some growing pains from early applications that went into production, but now it's better because the people who are actually smart learn from mistakes made in the past. Aluminum is a fine material when applied properly. You can make an Al block tolerate any amount of horsepower you want, provided there is enough material there to disperse the stresses. I really hate it when people will bash on an Al block when it comes down to the power potential that we are accustomed to (4g63), when it's not what material that matters, but HOW MUCH material. It comes down to the safety factor that was engineered into the design. I could make a ****ty iron block if I wanted to and morons here will praise it because it's iron. That's not what matters. The 4g63 is not good because it's iron; it's good because it was overbuilt. It had a high safety factor in the design. It's possible that this 4B11 will also be overbuilt, but instead it's made of aluminum possibly with a ferrous sleeve. Do we know for sure it's going to be as stout as the 4g63? No, we don't, but I do know that you cannot discount an engine as being less stout because it's aluminum. It depends on all the design factors; not just material choice alone.
I can't believe people will pick on the engine layout, either. Who freaking cares? Cold comes in the front; hot goes out the back. I don't see any problem with this. Turbos don't need fresh air flowing around them; they are cooled by oil and sometimes water as well. It doesn't make sense to put it by the radiator as in the current format. Having it in the back has the minimum amount of hot exhaust components within the engine compartment with no crossing over by stuff you don't want to get hot. Cramped engine compartment? Who cares? You are getting all the crap you asked for. Can you say S-AWC? That crap has to go somewhere, doesn't it? A small engine compartment means that the rest of the car was kept small too, while packing in all the features you wanted. A roomy compartment means the car could have been smaller.
Curb weight? Again it's getting all the crap you wanted. The new auto-manual will weigh more as well. A slightly heavier auto-clutch shifted car will outperform a similar lighter human shifted car EVERYTIME. Plus if you are that butt-hurt about the weight, you can get the manual version. I'll repeat that again, there will be a manual version that will weigh less. It seems people pick on the auto-manual when hating on the X, when they can get the manual as well. Lame. You have a freaking choice; be glad you do.
And then there's the "OMG the X sucks for aftermarket because the new trans can't handle the power." Maybe, maybe not. We don't know. Maybe the trans can be modded. Maybe not. Maybe it can be replaced by a stronger unit. Maybe the standard manual will prove to be the better choice for modders after all. That doesn't doom the X to being the weak link in the chain of evolution. Yes, there will be some obstacles to be overcome, as with any totally new model. This is what engineers do; solve problems. It's going to be fine. Don't worry about it, ok? Leave that to people who actually know what they are talking about. So no more *****ing about how much the X is going to suck because it's automatic and hard to mod, because you can get the manual if you want it. But remember:
Auto-manual>you
Interior? Again, lots of people complained about the interior of the current Evos and Mitsu listened. Maybe you liked it how it was. Well, too bad, I suppose. The X is probably going to get that cruise control you hate so much. Your girlfriend might actually be impressed with your car if you had an X. I don't know about you guys, but all I get is sausage checking out my IX. It would be a nice change to draw in some more female attention.
Seriously, you can have your opinion on the looks and interior, but when it comes down to the performance nobody knows. I think it’s really stupid to think that it going to be worse than the current Evo because of this or that. YOU especially can’t speculate, because designing cars is not your job and what you think you know is insignificant to what the actual designers know. It’s not going to be perfect, but it’s going to be way better than what you can do.
Am I going to trade in my IX? No, I love this car. The X is going to be sweet though. If I just had to have the X, then I would add it on to my collection, but the IX is here to stay. I do agree that the current generation has a certain element of “rawness” that I like while the X is a bit more refined, but to say the X is ruined is very, very retarded.

Yeah, I totally agree. Just stop pointing the bad points on the upcoming X, instead anticipate for the best. I've been driving a JDM VIII for 4 years and I'm very much looking forward for the arrival of this next monster. Indeed, the current IX is the best gen evo to date but that doesn't shame the due X. It will and definately be better than the generations before. Just refer back the the very 1st gen. There isn't a case where a newer generation is inferior to the older generation. It just get better and better.
As for aftermarket tuners, I believe the major jap tuners are working concurrently with the ongoing X production, and according to reliable source, HKS are already developing aftermarket parts for the X. They are working very closely with mitsu.

X>IX>VIII….

yea, base lancer. exactly. the base lancer is not the evo x which is what i thought we were talking about? the engine design isnt the same. its not a lancer engine boosted. the ralliart edition probably will be though.
Last I saw, they're all getting 4B11's.
o yea, my other gripe is they are going to have the evo x, and a lancer ralliart. 2 different engines boosted, one FWD and one AWD. with aluminum blocks... i feel like its 95-99 all over again.
95-99 all over again? No aluminum blocks there. And those were great years.
and no, i honestly dont think there will be massive aftermarket support for 2 completly different engines, none of which anyone has any idea how anythings going to work. much less how much room you may or may not have. the entire car is different. tuners arent going to just have one main model to tune for. they are going to have no less then 4. the ecus are all different for all the models to. you have one for the 5 speeders, the autos, the cvts, the AWD, the ralliart, and the base model. thats 6 different combinations of parts and tunes that all need to be done on EACH model for the desired application.
No massive support for 2 completely different engines? That makes negative sense. So I guess that's true for Honda then, who has countless engines ALL with "massive aftermarket support".
this isnt like the evo having 2 models (the mr and rs, gsr) to tune for (and really its not even 2 as the only MAIN difference is an extra gear.
MR, RS and GSR are 3 different models, not two.
not to mention also the cost of replacing some of said parts. cvt isnt exactly cheap. nor is anything on the base lancer, i cant imagine the evo x.
Neither is a tranny on an Evo IX. Don't break the ****, no worries. If it breaks from racing, suck it up or DON'T RACE.
its also not like you can just go anywhere and start swapping parts in and out, its a whole new "Global platform" with dodge, mitsu, and hyundai parts and engineering. if those 3 companies dont scream "not reliable" to everyone then some of you have issues....
This statement makes no damn sense. What does swapping parts have to do with reliability?
and i am under no illusions as to the fact that i said mitsubishi's arent realiable above. the new outlander is pretty decent, the new eclipse is too. time will tell on the lancer. hell, we all own mitsus, we should all be weary, lol
