Think about it : if you have gone to the trouble of developing a whizz-bang new clutchless box ,you have to make sure that its quicker than a conventional manual right ?
So the best way to do that is to hobble the regular manual gearbox by spacing the gears further apart ."

Has Mitsubishi deliberately HOBBLED the manual in order to make the TC SST Faster ? What do you guys think ?

If you do some reasearch on 6-spd versus 5-spd on the Evo VIII and IX, then you'll see that the 5-spd is much sturdier (search for user name GEARS). Mitsu most likely picked a 5-spd because it has been holding up much better under race conditions than the 6-spd. IMO the 6-spd on the MR was a marketing gimmick to cater to people who just _had_to_have_ that extra gear ... even though it's slower in the 1320 and blows up after extended road racing.

Why not? the reviewers seems to like it a lot, IN FACT, some of them would opt for an auto instead of a manual.

It's not just any auto trannie. I personally like a manual car better but it will be a tough choice if I decide to get the x on what to go with.

we as a people have evolved from buying cars of the past which came with 2 gears, later 3, then 4, next 5, until finally we are at 6... 6 being on manual tranny cars and i think Merc or Lexus has an 8 speed auto right now... the bottom line is that 90% of the manual tranny cars on the road has a 6 speed.. i think the only ones who dont is the Pontiac Solstice/SKY, SRT4/Caliber, Honda Fit, and the new evo.... you can even get a new dodge dakota in a 6 speed manual gearbox!

Ford owns 33.9% of Mazda. That is more than enough to say they have something to do with the car manufacturing.
Not to go off subject, but Ford and Mazda DO have a lot in common.. I bought a 95 Escort in 95.. The only reason why I bought it, is because it was cheap and had a Mazda engine and drivetrain in it.. It was the GT model (woo hoo-yeah right).. The car is still running to this day.. I gave it to my father a long time ago, and he gave it to my uncle, and they are driving it into the ground.. The car runs awesome, just the rest of it is falling apart.. Hahaha.. Think it has something like 180K on it now..

As for the SST.. I want it.. But I'll wait for the bugs to come out of that considering this is the first time that Mits has come up with such a thing.. Unless of course it's just a DSG from Audi/VW that has been renamed..

That's the same thing I thought. They're getting more common, but 90% is nowhere near correct. On the other hand, even my Civic has a 6spd (and an amazingly smooth one at that). A performance-oriented car that's just being updated should have a 6spd.

I realize they had problems with the 6spd transmissions in the past, but this is a new model. Do you say "Well, I guess we could go back to the 5spd" or "This is our chance to fix the 6spd"? I'm almost tempted to think they intentionally crippled the GSR to make the TC-SST look faster. That, or they ran out of transmission R&D money by blowing all the cash on the TC-SST and didn't have any left to beef up the 6spd.

I understand the fun factor

but the SST doesn't seem to lag behind the manual in terms of fun, even if there is no third pedal, well, from what i read from the reviews at least.

Unlike you, I'd never commit to an exact percentage, because I'd invariably be wrong no matter what I said. However, it's certainly far higher than 10%. Non-Si Civics, Non-V6 Accords, Toyota Corolla (and all pre-'08 Camrys - no MT currently available '08+) all use 5spds. With the majority of 3 of the 4 highest selling cars in the nation using 5spds, and the highest selling not even offering a manual, it's pretty easy to see that this percentage is far higher than 10%.

On top of that you said "manual transmission cars on the road", not currently for sale, which would very clearly be vastly 5spds.
