Problem with TC SST / Why 5 MT ?
Unlike you, I'd never commit to an exact percentage, because I'd invariably be wrong no matter what I said. However, it's certainly far higher than 10%. Non-Si Civics, Non-V6 Accords, Toyota Corolla (and all pre-'08 Camrys - no MT currently available '08+) all use 5spds. With the majority of 3 of the 4 highest selling cars in the nation using 5spds, and the highest selling not even offering a manual, it's pretty easy to see that this percentage is far higher than 10%.
On top of that you said "manual transmission cars on the road", not currently for sale, which would very clearly be vastly 5spds.

sorry for the confusion, i was referring to BRAND NEW cars... and the Honda Fit and non SI civics could be considered the same thing... 5 spd 4 cyl accords would be added to the list, as well as the Corolla... bottom line is that more and more car manufacturers are moving to a 6 spd.. it's disappointing that Mitsu isn't evolving like the rest of the world...
so you can ***** and complain about how i didn't have 14 different "qualified" websites to back up the 90% figure i posted, which you probably would have tried to refute.. either way, get over it...
6-spd transmissions are being deployed more for fuel economy reasons and marketing than performance. On a car with a relatively wide powerband like the Evo, 5 gears are plenty. I can understand a 6 spd on a peaky car like a Civic Si though...

my bro has a 2008 sentra 2.0s. guess what its a six speed. when i drive it on occasion, i always forget 6. i grew up with 5 spd.
the kids among us will undoubtedly cry over 6 spd, because thats all they know. 5 spd it plenty.
i can see it being a problem at these meets kids go to. "...i have more gears than youuu...."

I am disappointed there's not going to be a 6spd manual X, but if they can't build a decent one I don't blame them. I'm kind of curious to see how the 6spd STI compares to the 5spd X, both in terms of speed and handling additional power.
The trend isn't towards how many gears are on a manual...unfortunately the trend is to make everything some type of auto tranny...I've had a lot of experience with the Audi/VW DSG and they are not as fun as any true manual...oh well, I guess the true enthusiasts are going to eventually lose out to the auto trannys...that sucks IMO...
I didn't read all 4 pages so if this was already posted I am sorry...
I actually had a conversation with the guy from Mitsubishi (yes he is from Japan) who actually is in charge of the transmission part of the Evo X and in broken english he told me the reason there is a 5 speed and not a 6 speed is that "Mitsubishi did not make the 6 speed tranny and they had issues with it so they are going with the 5 speed for performance and reliability".

If IS-F's tranny proves to be powerful on the track, then its means that the CVT can tuned aggressively as well.
