the point is that mitsu has chosen a new direction. in that direction, they are starting new. AND they have an advantage in that new direction. the evo? it just doesnt fit this new direction. HOWEVER, that is not to say there wont be a spiritual successor to the evo. will it be the same? of course not. will it have the same relative impact that the old evo did? i sure hope so...

look at this video. there is obvious evo tech that has trickled down and changed to be more green (electric vs hydro-mechanical). by the same token, you can see potential for a really fast and sporty car.

all mitsu would have to do is use a strong gas/diesel engine, and run a driveshaft to the rear, and you will have a super fast AWD car that would blow the doors off a volt. and lets not kid ourselves here. the future will look more and more like the volt and less and less like a 17 mpg evo....

A couple of points, parts of which have been touched upon earlier:

First, the EVO line is the foundation for the Mitsu line...the Mitsu rep in my area indicated that the Endeavor and Galant R gone, both of which do not have the EVO X front wide mouth grill...while it is true the Eclipse is also going and it has the EVO front but apparently low sales have killed this car. That leaves the Lancer models all of which the local rep said will survive including the EVO. So U can question the voracity of this rep but the fundamental question is, how can Mitsu continue the Lancer line w/o the EVO?

Second, the rage now is fuel economy... is going down this road in a big way with 4-5 econobox models of electric, electric gasoline, and probably diesel... even Formula 1 cars have kinetic energy recovery system with electric motors (KERS) and R going to a 1.6L I4 Turbo to save fuel... BMW produced a concept hybrid car with 500hp (or somewhere in that ball park), Tesla all electric, etc. produce performance but with (apparent) fuel economy (at the vehicle level)...EVO X with 23mpg does not fit the current mode of performance with mileage...from an engineering and feasibility viewpoint, even Audi's S4 with a V6 gets higher mileage at 27mpg but with 333hp at the crank. Therefore, the current gasoline only-EVO is on the chopping block but the "EVO look and name" will emerge in a vehicle with higher mileage through the use of either gasoline or some other fuel coupled with KERS and a lot of performance...yes, the rally based EVO may B gone but not the name, for what that's worth.

That doesn't change anything to me. It just looks like they are at least acknowledging their fan base.

A better message would've been, "Put your money where your mouth is. We only sold 2000 Evos in 2010, why should we spend millions of dollars developing another one for a bunch of people who talk trash about it, but don't pull the trigger? Buying one used doesn't count. We'll be watching over the next sixth months before we make our final decision."

Thank God the rumor was debunked; it seemed weird that Mitsubishi would even consider dropping the Evo altogether.

When I first heard this, I was hopping they would pull a Nissan and be like, "We're no longer manufacturing the Nissan Skyline GT-R... but now we will be manufacturing the Nissan GT-R." In that respect, I can see Mitsubishi dropping the Evolution as a trim of the Lancer and having the Evo be its own thing.

It's true that the market and consumer base will greatly impact the future direction of the Evo; it's how the Evo X came to be. While some continue to debate the 4G63/4B11 powered Evo battle, Mitsubishi did make the Evo X to attract a wider consumer base and with that came a crap-load of technological refinements. I know they were definitely attempting to get the BMW M-series consumer-base to switch sides. Even so, the preference of 4G63 powered Evo's and 4B11 powered Evo's comes down to the individual's idea of which is better; whether it be in terms of style, performance, practicality, etc. At any rate, the Evo has always been about performance and functionality; and regardless of what direction the Evo takes, it'll be about those elements first. Although some may not agree of how that performance is achieved, I'm sure we can expect the Evo to always be the top-performing vehicle from Mitsubishi.

Both of those cars are concepts, although the bottom one is probably very close to what the production car looks like. It is also designed for aero for high mpg's so perhaps the full Evo mouth look wouldn't work. It still looks very similar to the upside down trapezoid that's been on Mitsus for years.

The front grill on the econo box looks nothing like the EVO mouth and is stark contrast to the ClearTec model (in video) which does. The only thing that is similar in the econo box front grill to the EVO is the hole through which air passes. So the Lancer line and this ClearTec continues the EVO look...suggesting there will B an EVO...what will sit under the hood is unknown but not the currently configured 4B11T.

I would glady open my wallet for an Evo. The problem is my workplace...like many many others... cut salaries so much that i can't. If my salary was what it was 2-3 years ago (unfortunately was a college kid), then i'd be driving an Evo and not a GTS.

I'm sure some others on here can say the same. But in Canada, 41k for an Evo GSR requires a strong salary... and thats the problem.

I can get a STI sedan for 37k.
