Confirmed by Mitsubishi high offical: Lancer Evolution is no more
Mitsubishi is in serious trouble, I'm not sure what their issue is but they market the wrong cars, i mean look how well the 3g eclipse sold, it wasn't even that great of a car but they did get one thing right MARKETING.. It doesn't matter if you sell the greatest car on earth, if nobody knows about it, then its not going to sell end of story.. That being said, i have NEVER seen an advert for ANY EVO on any station.. The reason why the STI and WRX sell so well is because of advertisement.. They are basically trying to make the consumer feel like its our fault the evo isn't selling. Look at the suzuki kizashi!!! they compare it to audi bmw and mercedes in their commercials.. WHATS THE PROBLEM MITSU?!
All they have to do is advertise their worthwhile vehicles and people will show up to dealers to buy them. While i'm on the subject of dealers..... Mitsubishi really needs to take a step back and re-evaluate the customer experience i can't remember talking to anyone about how pain-free and enjoyable their experience was at a mitsubishi dealer.. And everything that makes the evo such a great deal goes out the door when your paying ridiculous markup on a car.. Yes you can travel out of state or buy used, but why do that when you can just go over to subie or nissan and buy the competition without getting hosed. Lets not talk about the warranty process either
As far as fuel economy goes i'm going to go ahead and call BS on this one, Mitsubishi is in the process of making a deal with nissan to use the m37-56 platform to create a diamante replacement.. And let me tell you that car is GREAT on gas.. hahaha Mitsubishi makes great driving cars but they seriously need to look at building in some reliability into their product and seriously get their quality control up! The cheap cheap outlander sport has a better quality interior than the 40k+ evo mr.. this is stupid to me. Mitsubishi has to be making a killing off of the evo, (i'm going to get flamed for this) but what they have basically is an eco car with wide fenders awd and a turbo, they charge and EXTRA 10k for this right off the bat, seriously?
As much as i hate to say it, dodge had the right idea with the srt-4... serious performance and modability for 18k brand new 21k out the door.. Lets play devils advocate and say they sold an AWD srt-4 an added another 3-4k on top of the asking price.. They would have killed the competition. The evo 10 is an amazing car, but after sitting in an 8,9, 10 i fail to see the better interior quality, they basically took out the softer touch dash from the old lancer and put plasic everywhere with some added sound deadening.. Yes it has more features but that means nothing if the place you spend 100% of your time driving your car is crap compared to an sti or 370z or even a mustang (design being irrelevant) Mitsubishi really needs to get their crap together... The first and last Mitsubishi i will ever buy is my evo ix, yes its fast and yes its one of the best performing cars in its class but after the ix it seems like all the passion is gone..
RIP mitsubishi... RIP

I believe people have already posted this, but I think they just mean the EVO as we know it will die, and that's really not new news. They have been talking about hybrid/ diesel hybrid EVOs for a while now, and as many people on here have stated, they don't think those are real EVOs.
Maybe Mitsu thinks it's wiser to kill the name (at least in the short term), and have their next gen "sport car" called something else. It really gives them the upper hand from two standpoints.
1) It allows them to introduce a new sports car that has the potential to be marketed to many markets.
2) If that new "sports car" dies, they can always make an attempt at bringing the EVO back.
It's better than keeping the existing EVO name and making it a hybrid. Maybe the EVO name is out for a few years, but the new hybrid replaces it and who knows, maybe they bring the EVO back after a few years and they can go back to it's no nonsense roots, WHILE still having a second performance vehicle in there line...
....who knows, its all speculation

That doesn't change anything to me. It just looks like they are at least acknowledging their fan base.
A better message would've been, "Put your money where your mouth is. We only sold 2000 Evos in 2010, why should we spend millions of dollars developing another one for a bunch of people who talk trash about it, but don't pull the trigger? Buying one used doesn't count. We'll be watching over the next sixth months before we make our final decision."

Now I will be out of college soon and got a decent job, I will open my wallet and get an Evo soon.

on a side note people need to stop saying mitsubishi will crumble when they stop making the evo because the evo keeps them a float...its simply not true.
"When thinking of the Mitsubishi Lancer, most car enthusiasts envision a muscular Evolution X charging through a remote mountain pass. While the Evo hogs the spotlight--and the imaginations of car nuts -- it is the humble, less aggressive Lancer that serves as the halo car's foundation and rules the three-diamond's annual sales sheets. In 2010, the base Lancer accounted for 46% of Mitsubishi's total U.S. sales; the Evo only 6%."

Yes but to get the whole story how many actuall evolutions are imported to america, if they sell every last one then thats a good statistic. i personally never see them last on dealer lots here for more than a week or so

"It is conceivable that, given the resources put to the PHEV drivetrain, a high-performance derivative could be developed" to replace today's Evo, an unnamed source close to the situation in Japan told Inside Line on Thursday.

1. they'll put out a "performance" hybrid, without the Evo badge (thank god)
2. it won't sell well
3. they'll make a few changes and lower the price
4. it'll sell more, but still not enough to justify having as their only performance car
5. they'll bring back the Evo in 5-6 years

Like nobody saw this coming about three years ago. Shame to even call the X an EVO when compared to the 7-8-IX's level of actual performance and durability. Long as they keep making replacement parts to keep what EVO's are still on the road in the years to come. Glad I was able to purchase some of the best EVO's ever made. Will be interesting in the years to come what becomes of the EVO's on the used market.

the X is technically a better car, the problem is that the after market just isn't what it was with the old evo's 4g63.. problem with making performance cars with a huge after market following is that the after market doesn't usually catch up until all these new cars are used..
The x IS world class but like i said earlier pricing is always the key.. And the dealers don't usually help ANY when it comes to selling these "performance" cars think GTR, they were marked up 10k!! Its all good though bc there are plenty of x's trying to break some records now and it takes a while for the "pedigree" effect to come in like with the 7,8,9 evo cars.. the 7 wasn't well received either but look how that all turned out.
Anyways Mitsubishi as a whole has issues just like everyone here has already pretty much come to
